Question about hydraulic filters

I know most splitters have inline hydraulic filtersf, but my splitter is probably 20 years old and has been used hard and put away wet and has never had one. Has it just been lucky not to have had a problem all this time. My pump just wore out and I am replacing it but I figure it had a good life. Should I put a filter inline now or just figure it could go another 20 years without one?

If your going to replace the pump ya might as well invest in a housing/filture assembly and install it on the return line. The link gives a referance but you might want to look at the specs of the pump to match the gpm
