Very nice. Might want to cut an opening in top cover to let heat out to prevent hot starting problems .
Yes that is the next thing i want to do once i have it apart to install new piston, this thing is really making want to buy a 572xp.

Thats what dealers do typically when replacing a case half, stihl dealers will scratch out the old serial and stamp it in the new case. Not uncommon at all, and i guess id take the OPs word for it, that it came from a dealer that way, rather than be a dink and not provide anything useful.

Yep, when Husq warrantied my 550XP and sent me another one, I was able to "buy it back" from them and with the check I sent them, I had to put the S/N tag in the envelope.

Strike three... Am I even going to be able to make a saw out of this?

I know it's been a few months on this thread, but I purchased a new 6 bolt case and installed on mine. The old 5 bolt needed bearings and seals and had a questionable crank.

The one pictured above could have a similar thing done to it. For what it's worth, the no sn tag could be a good thing, longevity wise.

Mine:

I also did the cutouts on mine:

I've got the el46 one too. No stumble, just screaming power from it. So not all were bad.

It's also had some cylinder messaging done as well as muffler work too.

I'm fairly certain the one with no tag was a dealer return. It's long gone now anyway.

I left mine alone except for opening the muffler. It runs great with the EL-46. So great that I left it home when I took an assortment to a guy's house that was looking for a saw.

I got a deal on a new low top 560xp cover and filter so that's what it's running right now. I notice no difference in performance, but we'll see when it starts to get dirty.

I love this saw. It's probably blasphemy here, but I sold my 372xp and kept the 562xp. We have a small farm and the 562xp is more than enough to do the larger tasks the 550xp cannot handle.
