Ladies and Gentlemen, I sell a lot of Elm for camping where I live. I assume most of it is Chinese Elm, given my location. I cut and split a lot of it. I know when its dead and dry it splits pretty easy. Wet is stringy and a pain in the rear. But today I came across some that was darker in the center and harder than crap! I've been told that there is Red Elm around here, but I don't know if I've ever come across it before. There was no bark so I cant submit photo of that, but do have some pics of logs.

Can anyone tell me if this is Red or not?

Appears to be red. Judging by the amount of torn fibers in those splits you actually got by pretty easy. Some elm is much worse than that.

I'd guess red based on those pictures.

Also, I am guessing what you are calling Chinese elm is more likely Siberian elm...
