Rope Storage

What is the best way to store climbing line for a long period of time? How long is it safe to store rope? A friend is giving me a new climbing line that he doesn't want ( used once ), but the line I have now is still pretty new. So how long can I store rope safely?

Coil or bag it, put it in a dark closet or anywhere where it won't be exposed to the heat, humidity, or sunlight or mice making nests in it. Depending on how often you climb, that rope should be good to go when you retire your current line.
