Ebay is only as good/bad as the person who sells/buys. It's great in some ways because you have a better chance at finding that oddball, no longer made product. But I have learned you have to be wary of descriptions like "everything seems to perform like it should", or "appears to be in great shape". I have received great deals and then also been deceived. Anytime you can't physically touch/handle/test drive something you're taking a gamble.

There are decent ways to buy from ebay, like choosing proven good vendors that package stuff good and sell at good prices but I haven't found a reliable way to sell there because it's hard to choose whom you sell to. You can block some buyers but not all of them and some people just start another account under a different name and start the scams all over again..
