I'm not claiming to be an expert in any way, just an average mechanical hobby type guy, but here's my free advice:

check out spare parts availability on that exact piece of equipment, look for the expensive parts or parts that can't be found/bought, and pay close attention to those on the machine you will look at.

Normal wear and tear items, that can be replaced with non factory parts (like tires etc) are not a deal breaker if worn or broken, but can be used as bargaining issues to lower the price.

Look for puddles/seepage of oil/hydro fluids as they will point toward how well the machine was serviced and what may need rebuilding soon.
