I have in the shop a Stihl 011av that runs well, looks good and is in good shape other than it leaks bar oil everywhere. The owner told me that the oil was thin because it was leaking fuel into the oil tank but I saw none of that. What I noticed was, after I ran the saw a few minutes and shut it off it would continue to oil the bar! Since it wasn't running it would actually oil whatever was under the saw. I've seen a few Homelites like that but all I had to do was loosen the oil cap for it to stop. Wondering what the fix is..

Just be happy that oiler works, as pump diaphragm is not available, vent is on bar side so loosen cap and putting on side won’t work.
drain oil tank when finished

Not my saw, just looking at it for the owner. Gotta admit I don't know much about the oil system and I told him as much. I do know that parts are getting scarce for 50 yr. old saws.
Actually, the oiler works too well!

I noticed there are several of these older Stihl chainsaws around but, like this one, the oiler doesn't work right or leaks severely. It would be nice if someone would copy the design and build a few of these pumps. The saw I have here looks almost like new and runs great. I know it's been used a bit because it doesn't have the original bar.

After market Pump diaphragms are available, since a year ago now, I think. Ebay, Little Red Barn, other places. For 009, 011, 012. Same part.

@ChainSawFlo has been offering oil pump rebuild kits for the 011AV on this forum.
Here is a post of theirs - https://www.arboristsite.com/threads/stihl-011avt.355462/#post-7603585

My 011 and 012 leak oil too.
I belive it is related to changes in the barometric pressure (weather). When we have low pressure weather, it creates a vacuum outside the saw, causing a suction to pull oil from the oil tank.
The next high pressure weather fills the tank via the tank vent/intake valve in the fill plug.
When I loosened the fill plug when storing the saw, the oil leak reduced substantially.

FWIW, my 012 always leaves a puddle of oil in the case after I put it away. At least there is oil laying in the case when I go to use it. Seems the nature of the beast.

I've changed pumps and it still does it. Put it away dry seems the only solution.

I currently have a little over a dozen saws now, different makes and models and most of them leak oil, so, like said above, drain the oil before putting it away.
This 011 sat on my desk overnight and doesn't have any oil under it. Maybe the 30W did the trick.

The thing doesn't leak as much since I put the 30w oil in it. I gave it back to the owner today and explained to him what was done. About 6 hours later I was given an 010 to work on by someone else. I don't know what's wrong with it yet.
Always makes me laugh when same or similar versions come one after the other

I went out and looked and it's not an 010 after all, it's an 015L which is a completely different animal. The oil pump is a gear driven thing rather than an impulse driven diaphragm type. Probably all I need to do is clean it up a bit and get it running.

09, 010, 011 and 012 models all use compatible parts and have the same problem with leaking oil. It's mainly because the oil pump is in the tank and has an open feed pipe full of oil after use. The breather is simply a hole with loose split pin (upgrade to a larger, more secure pin if rebuilding) that can also weep. Also ensure that the long coil spring restrictor is fitted inside the pipe. I have all my machines in specially designed plastic trays and leave them empty after use. It's just one small design flaw in an otherwise fantastic range of classic machines.

I wouldn't recommend engine oils as the chain and bar wear will increase and the pollution factor should be considered. I use specialist Bio-Oils with good adhesion and being fully biodegradable can be used safely in any environment. I cherish my fully rebuilt and irreplaceable 010, 011 & 012 and having lung problems, also use MotoMix or a similar petrol mix to mutual benefit.

If anyone needs a new Plunger with Diaphragm or pump service kit, please look at my EBAY listing (UK)

4-5 years ago I looked into getting the plungers made in Asia. I gave it a miss as I did not think there could be that many 009,010,011,012 still in service to justify the money for setup and production. How wrong I was.
