This is my next project.
I had it out today, but only had a few minutes to check it out.
It has a good bar and chain.
I tried it and it does fire.
Hopefully I will get the time to compression test it tomorrow.

Some pics from just after I bought it.
This is a Stihl 015R not a Stihl 015L.

Got to put this project on hold. No money to order parts now.
The oil tank gasket is bad.
Still haven't checked compression.
I totaled up the price on the parts I think I will need and it will be in the $65 - $70 range.

If anyone is thinking about fixing one of these up.
Do it.
The parts are available.

I was pretty suprised looking for parts what I could find new.
There are also aftermarket parts available.
All gaskets, air filter, fuel line with fuel filter attached, piston and rings, carb kit, etc.

The only bad thing is it comes from a bunch of different places, so shipping adds up.

I have one in pieces with no name plate.

What's the difference between the "R" and the "L" models?
I'm not sure if there is any difference.
I don't have a 015L to compare.
This is the only 015R that I've seen.

The regular 015 top handle with points, etc. was just called 015. I always thought that when they went to electronic ignition is when they changed the designation to the L. Guess I was wrong on that. I would have thought the R designation referred to rear handle, but seeing that on a top handle blows that theory also.

I will try to post better pics whatever day I get home in time.
Here is a quick pic that shows the label.

I've had a bunch of these and this is the first r I've seen also. From the sticker style, I'd guess it was a late production to try and add some pizzaz to an outdated model. I have a cherry L that I'm getting ready to sell right now if you need to compare anything.

Here's my 015L, you can see from the pix it's had very little use. Darn near unused condition and came with the original carry case.

I worked on one that had never touched a stick of wood @ 15 years ago. It was bought as a gift, and they never could start it. Turned out that the points cover had pinched the wire to the points from the factory. Should have been warranty, but it was over 20 years old then!!
