Stihl 026 or MS261

So, I was in the local pawn shop today. They had a decent MS261 (Non cm) on the shelf for $179. Most likely will knock off a little as well. I already have a 026 that is in decent shape that runs well that I could get a decent price for ( I would think $175 to 200). Would it be a upgrade at all? Just being a newer saw should count for something, right?

The 261 will run circles around a 026, stock or ported. Not only that, it has much better AV and the best filtration on the market. It's an upgrade no matter how you look at it.

Looking back I think the 261 may have had oiler issuses. The Laminated bar was dry as a bone and edges looked like the had been heat treated.

$179 is real cheap. New ones, at least in my area, go for over $600.

At that price you could replace the oul pump and still be way ahead.

Not saying the 026 is a bad saw because I love cutting with mine. That is a decent price for a running 261 and they will take the 026 for a walk any day.

The 261 is bulkier and adds more weight but everything else is ahead: Antivibe, smoother engine, nice powerband and if it's not M-tronic you can still make adjustments to the carb. Heck even with a new oiler and bar the price is way down !

Picked it up tonight. Hope I did OK. Haven't pulled the muffler but compression was 180+ on my gauge. Only issue was the chain brake handle was broke on the recoil side about a 1 or 2 above the screw. Maybe some epoxy would fix it up. Also, the 18" E bar has seen better days. Maybe a dressing would help that.

I don't think JBWeld is going to hold up at all on a stressed plastic part like a brake handle.

180PSI is pretty standard on a 261. Sounds good.

If the handle is soild through the middle, drill both side, put a pin inbetween and plastic weld around the perimiter.

You did very good on that saw. I like mine very much. Open up that muffler. You will be surprised in the difference.

I was thinking about putting a pin in the recessed part of the handle and then filling with epoxy. Can't hurt anything to give it a try.
