So, I think I got an alright deal. Browsing CRlist yesterday evening, I stumbled upon an stihl 084 av basket case with new piston, 48" bar and 2 stihl 015l top handle saws for 200 bucks! Only real problem was it was 4 1/2 hours away! So not letting that stop me I decided if it was still there when I got done today I was making the trip. I called her back when we finished up and she said she hadnt had one call other then me. So filled up got an address and picked it up.

Thanks guys, 9+ hours of driving, $100 in fuel, + food. Stihl totally worth it. lol It looks as if it was used and abused pretty hard. the gas tank looks epoxied, its also pretty grimy could use a good wash and inspection. The chamber is pretty scored and so is the piston. I need to make a few calls today about getting the chamber re plated or bite the bullet and get a new one. Now to find someone i can trust to leave it with to when I pick it up it runs and operates like it should... Ive had a lot of bad luck with the small engine shops around here.

I'd say you wanted it pretty bad. I thought basket cases were for hobbists. Jk I wonder how much it would cost to pay to have it rebuilt and assembled?

Yeah, well there is a pretty big oak log I have been putting off milling for a while. I am waiting on my pantherpro milling attachment to get in (its shipped). The biggest saw I own is an echo 750 evl which I dont think is up to the task of milling 36" slabs of oak... The Stihl 661 I have the honor of using semi regularly is a buddies and the way I understand it milling is hard on saws. I am not willing to run his newish $1200 saw that hard and risk anything. I had been on the hunt for a larger power head for a couple months. There was a Stihl 066 recently in my price range on the TP here but I didnt come up with the other $100 I needed in time.:dumb: I spotted this deal and thought, well here is your sign... The old lady and I love road trips, helps when you love your truck. I talked to a buddy who has done me right on a few saws in the past. Problem with him is he is an hour away, but he owns a small engine shop and is in need of wood to keep his shop warm and I have plenty. He said buy the parts and he will clean it and put it back together. He wont do any after market work (porting, Muffler mods) so I havent decided to drop it off to him yet. Im thinking it may be worth having some work done to it while its apart, but at the same time im itching to get it together and start using it... Choices choices choices.... Either way, yes I WANTED IT BAD. I feel like it was worth it, and I know I will get use out of it. Oh and I am a hobbyist, thank god im lucky enough for my hobby to also be my job and passion:rock:.

While this tree was hollow, and the 661 and 36" bar did this one no problem, there has been more then one time this year we wished we had a bigger saw and bar. Now that we are milling, it was almost a must. At least a second large power head. There is another larger oak in my future I hope, no rot straight as a die 20+ before it splits off and 36"+ DBH that this 084 will be turning in to slabs as well if the stars align. lol

9+ hour drive! That's certainly dedication to the cause :)

Sounds like you are in good shape for a stock rebuild. I've done some crazy things for things I wanted bad. Usually it's a toy, or a tool of some sort. I'm not too sure I'd want a ported saw for milling. That's just me tho.

Nice grab, a few months back I sold a nearly nos 084 piston and jug for $240, parts are still floating around out there.

I have a used jug on the way. Got the saws in the house, about to take a tooth brush and degreaser to the 084. Once its clean ill drop it off and let my buddy give it a once over before the jug and rings show up so if there is anything else needed its not far out. I am ready to hear this beast run!!!!

Well I spent some time cleaning my work bench in the basement. Me a tooth brush, degreaser, paper towels, tooth picks, and q tips all got real close with the 084 for a couple hours. Dropping the saw off Monday. He is going to give it a once over before the new rings and used jug gets in. Hope to have the saw back together and running in a week or two.

Well here are the two jugs. The one that is burnt up and came with the saw appears to have been ported. The used jug I bought seems to be factory. Any ideas? Maybe the porting job is what caused the failure? If I could get good lighting i would take pics of the transfers as they appear to have had work done as well

Well dropped the saw off at the shop today. He called a couple hours later, said that it will be about 160 in parts. Thats new fuel lines, clutch, chain break handle, rings (the ones that came with the new piston, one was broke in half:(), base gasket for the cylinder, decomp valve, and carburetor rebuild kit. I think thats it... there may have been more im forgetting... Also the bar is bent:( not bad enough i noticed it ( I didnt look very hard either)... that is gonna cost me $101 and some change for a new 41" bar... But he said he could have the parts next day and have the saw back together this week!!! I cant wait until im running that beast!!!

Well, guys, I'm now working on an 084 AV that has good compression and a good spark. I've been parting out another o84 whenever I run into something that needs changing. To my horror, I discovered that the parted-out saw only has two major things wrong with it: (1) no spark (probably needs an ignition module) and (2) the outside clutch housing is cracked and needs replacing. If I replace those two parts, I might have both saws running. Top ends of both are all good. Compression on both is over 150 psi.

So, do I gamble and fix them both or send one to the showers? WDYT?
