Can someone give me a rough idea on what I should pay/value, seller is asking $1,600. Stihl 088 Magnum, runs good, 60” bar & chain. Seems used but in good shape overall.

I paid 1500 Australian $ (1100 US?) 18 mths ago for a saw a fair bit cleaner than that one. PHO.
They are getting rare though so a lot depends how bad your CAD is

That does seem high unless it's all OEM parts. Did you verify if any AM parts are on it, and what?

It is rare in my area to find one that has not been abused and/or filled with AM parts. Especially sprocket, clutch, carb parts, muffler. You definitely need to look under the hood and check the piston. Many of these were used for milling which really wears a saw quickly.

I bought my 084 for $300 because the farmer who had it couldn’t get it started. Ended up being a crank seal, replaced oil line, new spark plug and cleaning the carb. $100 repair with no aftermarket parts in it.

I would tell you that it’s real work running that one. It’s heavy and full open it is all you want to hold on if you are cutting with a long bar. Upside is you will turn a huge pile of logs into firewood in 10 cuts total. Lol

Something fell on that saw, pull the covers, recoil and muffler. Inspect the flywheel for broken fins, recoil for broken air dam and integrity of the recoil housing and if it feels like it is binding when starting..those are not cheap. make sure its a oem carb and peek at the intake side of the piston since that top cover is broken and might let chips directly in to the filter housing. Also look at and feel the av mounts because they will tear/stretch out on heavy saws or things are dropped on them. Look at the bar studs carefully, those long bars put a hell of a lot of stress on that case half and the bar studs.
I'd look up the prices of everything visibly damaged and hand them the parts price list and expected labor plus anything else you find including a tune up.

Good posts all. Would the ring on the rear handle indicate possible tree service use at height or from a bucket? If so, verify the structural integrity of the handle as well. The saw could have been dropped from height or had something dropped on it. Better and cleaner examples are likely out there for a comparable price. Max.

I, for one, wanna meet the guy that can swing an 880 from spikes in a tree. Then I'd love to see that saw hanging from his saddle. Just don't get to see that too often.
