Didn't they share the same starter cover Jerry? It looks to be at least the same as the 090g I have here.

Looks the same to me.
The typical 090 starter is a larger unit.
The typical 090 starter has a wider nose, like on the one pictured on scallwag`s saw above, the 070 and the MS270`s use a starter with a narrower/smaller diameter nose on it. Many arguments though on this being the case all the time as the starters are interchangeable and never a for definite case.

Note the AV mounts on the LHS of the crankcase as per the later model 090av, most of the chinese 070,s i see here are like this.

More likely an MS720 being that new, assuming a very recent photo that is... And pretty unlikely a saw that new would need a new starter

As far as I know yes. But I'd like to know what changed if anything with the name. Maybe like 044 to MS440, 026 to MS260 etc..

Flippy caps on the ms models (440, 260) instead of screw on caps like the 026, 044. Some models got a compression release as well.
