Bought a used Stihl 462c from guy claimed it wasn't sparking, sparked just fine, thought it was fuel problem, PLENTY of fuel getting to cylinder (EXCESSIVE flooding), took the head off and find this carnage!!!

first question is where did that piece of metal come from? all bearing pins are accounted for, plus it looks too small to be bearing needle.

2nd, the cylinder looks ok, will need some buffing to get transfer marks off, BUT if you look closely on top transfer port, on left hand size of picture, there is a sizable knick. Is the cylinder still usable or will it not run like that?

never thought about that, I bet that's what it was!!!!....the previous owner obviously put a new spark plug in thinking it was bad spark so can't 100% confirm make sense though! Thank you!!!

Yes sorry that is a wood chip, noticed that after I took photo!

on the left side there is a piece of metal still in grove...on the right grove there isn't anything. Which is weird because the rings don't have any groves in them but whatever it was still made it past the rings and almost out top of piston....

Both the ring pins were intact.

I showed father last nite and he pointed out the small scratch in head isn't Strait its curvy which means it was never actually running so someone probably tried to repair it and that piece of metal was inside the cylinder and they just crammed it on

Ordered a new piston polished head....should have it running soon 🤞

that cylinder looks like it’s got some good groves in her , can you catch them scratches with a finger nail ? They look deep might wanna look for a good used cylinder

Where did you end up finding a piston in stock?

I have a similar issue with a Mastermind WorkSaws 462c… piston’s toast but cylinder’s still salvageable (I think) with some muriatic acid to remove the aluminum deposits and some detailed polishing. Definitely not Randy fault over at MMWS… I put an aftermarket foam intake filter on the bugger and neglected to adjust the carb to account for higher air flow - ran it too lean/hot bucking some knurled up blue gum and didn’t catch my mistake in time.
