I am thinking about selling either the 039 or the MS290 now.

I guess the question for me now is, do I keep the 039 for my 20" saw and sell the MS290 or vice versa? Because I am seriously thinking about getting a 361, 362 type saw for my 20" bar. Then I would get rid of both (039 and MS290) probably and might even replace the MS180 at some point. I do like the 039 but it's not as powerful as the MS441C.

Any thoughts?

Based solely on the asking prices I see on the local Craig's List, the MS 290 would most likely bring a good price. And you've posted that the 039 runs well and you like it.

If you want a MS362 I would certainly sell the 039, the 290 and the MS180. You will get between $250 and $300 for the 039 and $250+/- for the 290. The MS180 is a tough sell but you could get $125 on a good day for it. That would give you 2 GREAT saws. Plus the MS361 will smoke the 039 in weight and power. I saw keep the 039 for now, sell the 290 and 180 pocket the money and save it towards a MS362. Then sell the 039

Pardon my ignorance guys, but at the top of this convo i gathered that the 362 is more powerful than an 039? Isnt an 039 just an older ms390? Or am i missing something?

You got it. The 362 is a fair bit lighter than the 039 and the 362 has more power due to a different design. the 039 is a farm/ranch saw. The 362 is built more like a pro loggers saw.

I'd say that rather than getting a 362 when you have a 441, it'd be better to get a 261. with a 441, you'd probably find that the weight on the 362 is so close to the 441 that you'd never really use the 362. A 261 or 241 are a lot lighter and better limbing and such saws.

You can always sell your 20" bar and get whatever else you want, or use the 20" on the 441 in smaller wood. 3/8 chain really chatters in smaller branches and doesn't seem to cut as fast as picco does.

Gotcha. So the bigger the number doesnt always mean more power... depending on whether or not its in the pro category or not.... thanks for the explanation.

Yes, there are 4 categories of saws. Homeowner, farm/ranch, pro, and arborist. If you go to Stihl's site, you can click on the various types and see what models are for each. Not all models are available in all sites.

You can compare the specs on all the saws as well. However, not all specs on paper translate into field use. For a loose example, the 362 has a higher chain speed with about the same power as the 039. So, the 039 might have the same or similar power on paper, but will not cut as fast out of the box.
