Hi everyone, I am going to start sorting alot of used still parts. I vaguely remember a couple threads that referenced the first 4 numbers in the Stihl part number as being a reference to the series of saw that it fits. For example an air cleaner cover has a number that starts with 1127 stamped into it so it must fit a ms*** series saw. etc. did a search came up with nothing so I figured I would post this and let the experts take it from here. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me. Mike

Every Stihl model is part of a series that gets assigned a series number when it goes into the R & D phase and if it makes it to production. Any parts unique to that series will have the first four numbers of the part number as the series number.
So look on the bottom of the tank housing and you will see an 11 digit number. If it starts with 1125 then the saw is a 034, 036. If it starts with 1127 it is a 029 039. And so on.
Some parts will carry over from one saw to another, and the number on the part may not be the actual part number of the replacement part, so don't try to order a part without looking it up on a current IPL.
So let us know what saw you have, MM.

I was cleaning out a file cabinet at work today and found a list of Stihl saws and the years they were produced. It must have originally been two pages because the page I have starts at the 038. I'll scan it and upload it tomorrow.

The list is correct, Saw Troll...

And yes, the 1106 is short a few models.

I have this list

It predates anything MS but still quite useful.
