Today at 4.30pm I was at the rack explaining several small model Stihls to, of all people, a sweet little old lady about 70 years old, maybe 5 foot tall, maybe a 100lbs. She was very intent on buying a saw and I was very intent not to sell her one. To my surprize she tells me she has a Stihl saw at home thats well over 20 years old but she can no longer pull the rope on it. She wants to bring it in for me to sell for her and she wants a smaller easier to start saw. Tomorrow she's bringing it in but for the life of me I will not sell her a new saw. She may buy one but not at my coaching. Now the funny part while I was cutting up and talking with her here comes another little old lady up to the rack looking for a electic hedge trimmer. This lady is older than the other one and she's walking with a cane, I swear on the bible. I pointed them out to her across the store and away she went. About five minutes go by and she comes back to the rack where we are. She asks if we have any gas powered hedge trimmers. I pointed on the rack and she goes they are kinda high but I know Stihl is pretty good, I have a Stihl chain saw and its real good. I about flipped. This little old lady had to be 75 at least. I told her are you sure you want a hedge trimmer that big. She says I'm not sure, I'll have to think on it, I'll be back and away she went. I'm glad she didn't buy one for I would hate to think of her using it and hurting herself just as I do with the other lady wanting the chainsaw. The moral of this story is sometime a sale isn't everything. I think I could have easily poured on the charm and sold both of these dear old ladies but no way would I, some sales aren't as precious as the ones wanting to buy. Those two gals made my day but not a penny.

  Too bad I live so far away...I"d buy a couple of files or something to help make up for your non-profit day. By the way...is that how we tell when we're too old to run saw anymore...we can't pull the starter rope?

THALL, glad to see somebody put the well being of others ahead of a sale. Funny story thinking of those two ladies using power tools. In Stihl's 05 catalog there's a picture of an elderly woman being shown the benefits of easy-start. Now I always felt that if someone isn't physically capable of starting a chainsaw that might be a good indicator that they shouldn't be using one.

THALL, one other thing I was just thinking of. What ever happened about you picking up the Dolmar line?

Thats why decomp valves are not always the best ever, the unworthy get to use big saws. I say good for those ladies, more jam than many young people from the sounds of it. Good for you too Thall.

I say sell em the saws and keep a look out for garage sales when their relatives are selling off their stuff after that tragic, freak accident!

Tonka the Dolmar thing is going up the corporate ladder right now and things are looking up. I got my fingers crossed we get the Dolmar line but the final decison lays with the man that sits in the top office. I've already sent the Dolmar bug his way and according to some of the lower ones down the pole that are pushing too its looking good so far................

When Kate Butler was here visiting, she gave me a good talking to that when i bought the Dolmar i had my eye on, i shouldn't use it unless she or some guys at a GTG gave me lessons first... Kate knows i'm clumsy, and is fearful i will discover the kick-back aspect way too soon in my chainsaw ownership...

not a problem right now, i've lost feeling in both hands and forearms... LOL... picking up a chainsaw is not on the roster until i get that problem fixed

however, i cringe at age-discrimination... THALL, at what point will you feel good selling the ladies the saws? they might be capable of handling them... just curious...

I was thinking that the whole time Dan and no way am I gonna be a part of that, no way. Tomorrow when she brings me her saw to sell I'm gonna very politely say mam I would really feel bad if you bought a saw and wound up hurting yourself. She may take offence but the thought of her using that thing and getting hurt is well worth the offence she may take toward me. I can't stop her from buying one but I can sure try. I was totally amaze that I was dealing with not one but two sweet little old ladies at the sametime. That was a first for me and one of the very few times I had no interest in selling anything. I did enjoy talking to them though, they were a blast. My favorite people are older people, I respect them and look out for them even if it means no sales. They are just to precious to be selling them things that could really hurt them bad.

Dont get me wrong, I cant stop anyone from buying anything. If they want what they want and they are determind I can't stop them. As for how old is too old there is no age limit to where I say no, you can't buy this or that. I can't and wont tell any customer that, no way. If they are a 100 years old I would never say no, your not allowed to buy that. I can however look out for their best interests and try gently steer them away from the idea of what they want. Its salesmanship going in reverse thats all. The profit is making sure they don't get hurt and to me thats a awful lot of profit.

C'mon, do you know if they were actually buying to use themselves? maybe there was a son or grandson waiting in the wings to actually use it.

All the big girls die young, that's why there's only little old ladies left.

just curious, tho... the lady who wants the chain saw-- let her show you how she can use it??? did she handle it or just look at it sitting on the shelf??? and the older lady, is she buying the trimmer for her grandson to use on her hedges???

i know how i feel when people think i am unable to use something because of my age (and i'm about 8 years older than you, THALL)-- like when i bought my standard shift car, the salesman & dealership manager tried to talk me out of it as "it will be tiring for you" they said... hmmm i knew what i wanted, was capable of driving it... so i'm asking these questions not to challenge you as much as to find out when my hair goes white, how to approach a man who thinks i can't handle whatever product i'm purchasing...

i admire your ethics... integrity is not common anymore...

Clearance let me tell ya. As I talked with them there was no doult they both were intent. The lady that wanted the chain saw was having a good ole time with me and I ate it up, I love old people, I really do. We were having a good ole time but never once did I say this is the saw for you or you don't need a saw. I merely carried on with her thinking the whole time you don't need a saw. I wouldn't sell my 76 year mother a saw and I wouldn't sell one to anyone else dear ole mom either. I did ask who is going to use this saw and she said "ME". I was hoping maybe a son or grandson or even hubby a but not her. She's coming back tomorrow and I'll let ya know whether she got a saw or not. If she does she is really gonna have to whip me,haha

Women with saws...

Dan I didn't get a chance to ask the one who wanted the hedge trimmer, she said she would think about it and left. The one that wants the saw I did ask and she said ME. Her problem is she can't pull the rope on her old saw so she wants one that pulls easier. Maybe I'm wrong for thinking the way I do but if ya put ya self in my shoes its not that hard to see. Last thing I want is even the remote possibilty of her getting hurt by something I sold her that I knew she didn't need in the first place. True it may never happen but some chances aren't worth a few bucks of profit. I'd rather have her safe and sound. I can do without the sale and enjoy the peace of mind instead.

You talkin' 'bout that smokin' hot redhead with green eyes and a smile a mile wide? Elderly? Dang, I've had a thing for her since I cracked open that catalog. That saw ain't all that's "easy-2-start" if ya know what I mean...

Maybe I'm just gettin' old, maybe it's my eye towards redheads, maybe it's just that that's the raciest thing I can read at wrk, but she sure isn't "elderly"....:givebeer:

Trinty she not only looked at them, she reached down and pick up a bunch of them. She came across a EZ start model and asked me to show her what is EZ start. So I pulled rope and she said hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. She took, sat it on the floor and pulled the rope too and the dayummm thing spun over. I thought oh lord. She knows she can start that model but whether she could actually get out there and run it is beyond me. Tomorrow her and me are gonna have a good ole time trying to out sell each other in different directions. Should be interesting and fun as well. If she gets a saw she is a better salesman than me...................
