"Trim" (lop/chop) top piece of tree

My thought (Oh Oh) ... to shorten tree (in pic, tree/property on right side)... While protecting the "stub"/remaining tree (most of it) both saved and protected.
To act as a tower to mount 100 pounds on top of cap (?) protecting top of tree. As like:
That "spinning thing" termed a Savonius rotor... and it's rated to generate 500 watts of DC electricity when spinning "fast"/on windy days in clear air. So again... Thought is to use the tree (most of it... hehe) as a tower to mount this Savonius rotor (weight) "up high"...
Yes? Any thought appreciated...

What kind of tree is it and how long do you expect the rotor to be there? Cutting the top will likely start rot on most trees. You may also get a ton of suckers coming out around the cut that will interfere if not kept trimmed back. If the tree dies, how long will the roots last?
Thanks fer fast! Golly... hehe... OK will cheque re tree species. Rotor "installed" ... for years... all seasons... "Starting rot"... "a ton of suckers"... WAS thinking to NOT have anything but a healthy and happy tree "to a ripe old age"... [Grin] WAS thinking of a tree w/top of central stalk lopped then capped w/some (adjustable diameter) collar/pipe section w/a top capped to mount/bolt on the bottom of the rotor... Have seen lots of trees that have survived bad damages... Just curious whether plant can be trimmed then protected at the same time... Cheers L

Now curious... No way to "trim a tree shorter"? ... Cut a few feet from top? ... and still ensure plant "stays healthy"? Was thinking rot from rains and a top "cap" built with side holes for air flows/ventilation...
Nothing you put over the wound will keep airborne microscopic decay fungi pores from getting in unless it is also something that will kill the tree.
As a rough rule of thumb:
When reducing height it length, you need to cut where there is a branch at least 1/3 of the diameter of the cut you are making. Otherwise there is a good chance the piece will die, or will certainly have a very significant flush of suckers. So if you cut to a 9" diameter top, it needs to be at a branch that is 3" or bigger.
Our power co-op will give away used poles to members. That is a better alternative than destroying a tree in my opinion.
