Upgrade hydraulic pump

I am buying a second hand splitter with a 11 gpm pump. I want to move up to a 16 gallon pump. The engine currently is 6.5 HP, a Briggs. It's a 24" cylinder, 4" diameter. A bigger pump needs a bigger engine in this case?

I've heard that the rule of thumb is a 8 hp is the minimum for a 16 gpm pump.

if the new pump is a two stage, try it with that 6.5hp and see how it works for you.

The 6.5 hp. engine will operate the 16 gpm pump but the engine will probably stall under pressure unless relief and kick down settings are lowered.

The pump to be used to it's full potential will require a 8 hp. engine.
