Water oak vs. white oak

I have been told many times that water oak is the same thing as white oak.
Anyone know for sure?

Water oak is in the red oak family

There is such a tree as Swamp White Oak that grows in wetter areas.

HuskStihl is right.
Two different species. (Swamp White Oak is a third.)
Water Oak is Quercus nigra, with a more southern range. White Oak is Q. alba.
If you know even a tiny bit of Latin, you'll see the difference is like black and white.
