Just got an 045 Stihl and have her completely tore down to swap crankcases and change crank bearings. This muffler came with and I am not impressed with it. Compared to my 045 Super, this one seems far more restrictive. I have never modified a muffler before so I don't know where to begin. If anyone has any advice or specific instructions on how to improve it I would appreciate it.

Thanks, Chris B.

Hi Chris-

You can actually open up the bottom outlet on that 045 muffler a bit and drill two 1/2" holes right there in the middle right above and below each other and bolt on a Stihl 029 exhaust deflector with a fire screen over the two holes. I think Stihltech said the rule of thumb is to make your exhaust outlets a total of twice the volume of the opening of the exhaust port on the cylinder. That way you don't lose too much back pressure.
