my oregon 3/8 chain box for my full chisel chain says 7/32, several of my semi chisel 3/8 chains dont like that file
(seems big) went and got stihl files for 3/8's and they are 13/64 (6.5 /32) what gives i thought I knew my stuff, im I dumb again???
or can you use either file? or does stihl chain only use the smaller??

help me be less dumb..thanks cobey

Just use a file that will fit the tooth's profile. Different brands of chain like different size files so I have some of every size. It's not complicated, use one that will work for what you want to accomplish.

3/8 till the chain is half worn out and 13/64 for the rest. It will leave a bigger hook if you use 13/64 at the beginning and remember, it's not the hook that cuts the wood.

a 3/16 also? earlyer used the 13/64 to fix a chain my brother in law tryed to
sharpen on a grinder  then touched the outside edge with the 7/32 ... havent tried it yet
