I'm not familiar with different varieties of ash but I've never seen the color go that far towards the sap wood. I've seen the dark heart wood but usually at least 6-12" of light wood near the bark.
Agree 110%. Siberian elm has thicker bark than Slipper(red) or American. It's dark like walnut almost but the live ones that I've cut down are really wet it seems.
