There is a difference between what will fit and what the saw can reasonably run.
I have run a 28" bar on my 038M but would not do it regularly. 24" is more reasonable.

I've got a ported 038 mag that runs a 36" bar with 7 pin, skip tooth with no problem. Use most on swell butt cedar.

It all depends on what species you're cutting and which chain, how it is sharpened, so on.
