The State will foot the bill for the hwy. relocation. The Mine owns the land and mineral rights and let the state put 53 there with the understanding when the time came they would have to move it but It'll be a few years before
any construction starts.

there were a lot of mines in my area but over the past 40 years they have mostly dried up and all we have for big ones are MinTac, HibTac, UTac, and a few others that I dont recall. Ther are several big projects starting though like the essar steel plant and mesabi nugget which should help out

Inland (also known as Minorca) and Keetac are the other two all of which are shutdown right now with utac supposed to start up the middle of June.

I was in contact with a former colleague in Duluth who works for Mn/DOT. I asked him about this job and he was unaware of any proposed work on that stretch of highway. However, these things change often.

That being said, I would be very surprised if Mn/DOT did not own that highway outright. In my experience, they just will not build a highway if they cannot get clear title to the land. I know of some special circumstances where Mn/DOT doesn't own the right of way, but it is rare. My friend suggested that if the highway does need to be relocated, the state may split the costs with the mines and that way everybody will be happy. And remember, the state has condemnation authority so they can take the land and pay fair market value for what is there. They have no reason to make a deal that would end up costing them money in the future.

Yeah it is pretty amazing how many people disappeared in North Branch when the housing market tanked. A lot of people over their heads in the sprawl there.

Nice thing about my job is I am usually home Thursday late (midnight or so) and work from the house Friday. I watch the parade of idiots making a parking lot on the interstate from my porch until about 9 or so every Friday nite. Then, all day Sunday, watch them do it again going South.

Wifey works in Forest Lake, and knows to take 61 up.

Rush city was a good compromise for me - didn't want to live in the cities, but needed to due to the modern "conveniences" (airport, UMN, availability of parts, dining, etc). Yet, I am far out enough where I don't have to keep a shotgun loaded behind locked doors at the ready every second like when I lived in Shoreview (now I just don't have to lock the door :greenchainsaw: ) Nice town with nice folks (2,000 or so people) and I am on the outskirts of that. Have about three houses anywhere even close to me, and they are all farmers (easy enough to get along with).

Seeing as I grew up in the UP of MI, Duluth or higher would have been fine with me as well, but the Mrs had to have work too.

I do wish there were more trees around though - being a wood scientist, this is the first time I lived somewhere that wasn't covered in trees (Michigan, New Hampshire, Maine).

I lived in North Branch for 8 years. Got out when the crowds started moving there and traffic was backed up there for 2-3 hours every weekend with the people trying to get up north. Glad I'm outta the cities.

I got out in late 2000 when the housing market was still strong. It took a week to sell our house in North Branch, but the real estate agent said that she could have sold it in a day if it had more than two bedrooms. I always wondered how long it could last. I had to drive into the cities for work which, if I remember correctly, was about 50 miles one way. I don't know how I did it but I'm glad I am outta there.

Come on.....you can admit it!

Any new guys/gals from MN that haven't posted in this thread? Come on.....you can admit it! LOL

It's kinda cool to see that we're not alone in our struggle to find a heat sorce in this cold country. However, I wouldn't trade it for a hot area. I went to Vegas in the summer and hated the heat! I don't like burning my hand on the window of the car while driving! That's way too hot! I did get my Jonsereds 520sp in Vegas for $20.00. Something GOOD can come from there! :)

Stewartville, MN. Originally from Hayward, WI. I've tried to move back there a few times but just couldn't find the work (not in the tourist trade). I will have to settle on Hayward and Shell Lake for my vacation spot/weekend getaways.

Fall out of a slot machine?

Not quite.....however, I bet the money the pawn shop gave the guy for it might have gone into a slot machine....

If you are within driving distance, check out the Mn/Wi/Ia/Up GTG thread. Grantsburg, Wisconsin. TOMORROW!

Philbert

Already in the plans! Should be a lot of fun!

jtimm, if you aren't busy tomorrow, Grantsburg should only be an hour or so from you. Lots of saws to play with, and people to meet.

Grandpatractor's place is easy to get to. From the junction of 70 & WI 87 in Grantsburg, go south a few miles till you get to Hwy 48 EAST. GT's is about a mile or so E on the right hand side, they should have it pretty well signed.

I'll be there, and a few guys are driving all the way up from Iowa as well.

Yeah, I'm familiar with Grantsburg as I bought my wheeler there at Wild river Sports Cycle. It's about a 35-45 minute drive approximately. Sounds like a GREAT time!
