i used to live in mass city/greenland up there, moved back to mn. now i am moving to hancock to attend michigan tech. I am looking at land on the sturgeon river by chassel to settle on. My friends grandfather used to own the truevalue/lumber yard in mass, he was a hendrickson. if you grew up around ontanagon you might know the familly.

After I graduated from high school I worked for Bob Lukeri who at that time owned the true value. did construction for him but did allot of work in the store too. I have lived here all my life, grew up in White Pine. But now live in Green(between ont. and silver city) the Stergin River is a great place, What a beautifula area. I know quit a few hendrickson's have one for a neighbor even.

I think the crappy motel may still be there. Or maybe it's one of the other ones that were around there.....LOL
I went through there about a week ago and I am still amazed at how much the area has changed. I really like what Mn/DOT did with the TH 53 rebuild down the hill toward the lake. I worked for Mn/DOT until this past January and was wondering how they would do this job. Looks good.

Hwy 53 between Eveleth and Virginia is going to be moved due to the ore pit expanding to the NE. Right now the pit is within a stones throw away from the hwy and we have to shut down the hwy when we blast on that end.

Where is Evelth or Virginia,MN.? My brother-in-law worked in that area at a mine(don't renember which one)for a few years back in the early, mid 70's.He made alot of cash till he got laid off.Nice country around there or at least back then.I was only up in that area once back then and we did alot of partying:cheers:brought up a few dirt bikes and had a ball.

In the north east part of the state at the mouth of the arrowhead. Did he work at MinTac by chance

I was just joking,I know where it is.It could have been MinTac but I don't remember. Was there alot of mines going in that area at that time?I don't talk to him too much anymore and he left from up there so long ago talk of it doesn't come up alot.He married my sister the year he got laid off.

I better chime in.

I currently live close to Cambria, MN. It is more a place than a town. About smack dab in the middle between, Lake Cystal, New Ulm, Nicollet, and Mankato. Courtland is acutally the closest, but courtland isn't really a town either. Cambria does have a bar that makes killer burgers. I have been told in order to be a town, you must have a bar and a post office. Cambria has the bar but no post office anymore. I am actually about 2 miles from cambria in Gods country.

What's a skidoo? Steve

I assume that is a joke.

As far as I am concerned there is only 1 kind of snowmobile that would be a skidoo.

Your right about being a joke, I own 3 98 MXZ500 99MXZ600 and a 2001 Summit 700 and just about bought a 2001 MXZ 800 yeaterday for $1500, I should have, it was clean with 2400 miles. Steve

I have been wondering when they might get close to the highway there. They have been mining that hillside for quite a while now and it was always kind of close to the highway. I gotta believe that Mn/DOT won't be doing that job for free. I suspect that the mine will be picking up the cost of that job........... Probably in full.

On the other hand Mr. Oberstar is chairman of the transportation committee. You think he may be able to get some funds sent to his district to relocate a highway to make room for a mine expansion?

Hey I was just down in your neck of the woods last week. Also a couple of weeks before that. I had some training at Minnesota State at Mankato, or whatever it's called now. Nice country. I had no idea they mined so much limestone in the area.

Oh, and I know what a skidoo is, but I own a Yamaha ;).

Hey, you guys should know by now that Minnesota is a segregated state with some pretty clear boundaries that have only blurred slightly in nearly 150years.

Dang, can't find my map. Anyway, you follow the highways, but the Cities are an exception to the rule because you have those Ukranians and stuff that you don't find out in the wild.

So, if you live south of I-94 you are probably of German descent. North of 94 but west of 71, you are probably Norwegian or Swede. East of 71 you are probably Swede or Finn.

I grew up 40 miles NE of Moorhead, MSUM alum.

Mark
mark you wont believe my grannma moms side of family was full blooded Norwegian she was also sioux indian

there were a lot of mines in my area but over the past 40 years they have mostly dried up and all we have for big ones are MinTac, HibTac, UTac, and a few others that I dont recall. Ther are several big projects starting though like the essar steel plant and mesabi nugget which should help out
