a mfg such as Dolmar offer multiple saws of the exact same weight but different power levels? Ex. the 6400/7300/7900 all weight the same. So why would you carry around a 6400 if the 7900 was considerable more power. Same goes for the next size down. The 5100 is the same weight as the 510. So why offer the 510? Seems to me the only saws they need in their line up are the 3410/5100/and 7900. The 9010 makes no sense at all for its 2lbs. extra weight and miniscul extra power.
I'm sure other mfgs have the same disparity in their line up.
I'm goofy about these things. Like...I wonder why light pickups are broken into 3 marketing levels ex 1500/2500/3500. Why wouldn't just a light duty and a heavy duty fill the need. Heck they used to have heavy versions of all 3 levels at one time.

Why does Husky have Jreds in same model......

Why Poulan ,Husky ,Jred in some models????

Why MS290/310/390??

Why 345??/455/460 Husky??

Why MS650 and 660??

The 9010 is an older generation model. It may not be much more powerful (on paper) than a 7900, but it's a much heavier duty milling saw and for that purpose (milling) it's still in the lineup. It's also quite a torqer at lower rpms.

9010

I would like to see a stock 7900 pull a 32 inch bar buried with an 8 tooth sprocket and full comp like my 9010 will.

The answer is that they can come in at three different price points with the same tooling.

Tooling is expensive. Just remember... it cost the manufacturer the same money to produce that 7900 as it cost them to produce the 6400.

+ 1 not every 0ne wants to pay 900.00 for a saw when a 500.00 saw will do the job.

Because the specs are a lie! They are lighter than most but not as light as they say. I have an 036 with a 20" that is the same as the 5100 with a 20,I'm not talking power to weight i'm talking lugging it around in the field, at the end of the day heavy!

My Solo 681 did it with a 34" bar in Oak and I couldn't pull it down. Close to Same as 7900.

7900 is $545.00
5100 is $350.00

This may come as a surprise (especially if you've been on this site for long) but not everyone NEEDS a 6+ horsepower saw! I know.....it's hard to believe.....but it's true.
All joking aside my 6401 is more saw than I need 99% of the time. I rarely get into anything much over 24" at the base and my 031 or my 3400+ Poulan and 401 Makita are what I usually go to the woods with. The 401 RARELY stays home anymore because it is so light and handy.

+1 If someone wanted a very good professional quality (build quality) saw, and money was an issue, the Dolmar/Makita 6400/6401 is a very good choice. While my 6401 isn't my best saw, it is a great value at $420.00 with a 20" bar.

Because they can... same with the Stihl 290,310,390... Stihl 650, 660.. and there are many other examples across many brands..

How much of a price difference is there between a 6400 and a 7900?

Why is there any price difference when they basically cost the same to produce?

Maybe I am not suppose to ask that.....

Why does it make a difference? It is supply and demand, not a cost based system. Alot of real expensive things are sold with a very small profit margins.
