So I noticed this on an 028Super I bought. The missing piece was definitely missing before I bought it (as a basket case). I thought it was a retaining ring—like a snap ring kind of thing. I removed what I believe were factory bearings (FAG brand... can anyone confirm those are OEM?), and found that it’s a chunk missing from that lip. This is the clutch side, where the crank seal fits inside the bearing, so the only seal this would have would be the press fit between the new bearing and the case half.
I assume it didn’t leak before, as the piston and cylinder had no scoring. So my question is, what do you think my chances are of not having a leak down the road? Is the fit between bearing outer race and case air tight? Would I be advised to use some sort of sealant on the outer race as extra insurance?
