I can tell you for sure that is not bar and chain oil, it was in many logs, and in a perfect ring, not all the way across the wood

I'm pretty sure it is bar and chain oil that soaks into the sap rings perfectly. Try splitting a piece and look directly under the blue ring and you will see that it will not go all the way through the wood. I cut lots of walnut and saw the same thing.

I really think its oil or a reaction to the oil. every time ive split walnut and looked right under the blue, ive never seen blue down through the white sap ring.
 
theres nuttin in it. if theres wire nails or any other iron in it there would be a blue spot in the dark of the wood.
