    Poplar bark siding

i sold some bark about 3-4 years ago. you need to see the buyer for specs on what needs cut. its about too late in the year to bark trees and with our recent lack of rain its getting harder. when i sold some it was 1.50 per square foot. if you have a 3' diameter tree this adds up fast -...

    It pays to have permission

I guess this is one of my pet peeves and a reason i think rural america is in bad shape. around us 60% of the land is owned by someone many hundreds of miles away. they come once every two years to check things out and commune with nature. they bought it, they pay the taxes, they can do what...

    What size skidding winch?

i run a fransgard v-6000 on a new holland tn-60a. its a good fit. i had this same winch on a kubota MX-5000 before the new holland. the mx wasnt heavy enough. it wouldn't sit still when winching. you could back up to a stump or whatever if you were winching something big but that was a kind of a...

    tending to your chains

alright, i'm curious now. whats with the vise? i've never used one but i'm always open to ideas for improvement. is it easier to get sharp? maybe im just holding my bar still enough with my hand? - don't know. i don't have a problem getting really sharp hand sharpened chains as ive said but...

    tending to your chains

im not sure if holding still is so much the objective. what really clicked for me when i became better at hand sharpening was seeing what a well sharpened chain should look, feel, and cut like. then it was just a matter of replicating that. as someone said earlier - a good hand filed chain is...

    tending to your chains

i want to see how most of you guys keep your chains in order. ive been doing alot of cutting for several years now and have to say i hand file almost all the time. when i first started i think i would make the chain duller but i bought one of those small roller guides that sit on top of the...

Need a 3-point hitch winch for my tractor

i found a used fransgard V-6000. got it about 3 years ago for $800. the only thing ive ever done to it is replace the cable. its an older one - it has the feet instead of the blade on the bottom. dont know if there are any still out there for that kind of price but it sure beats the price of a...

Received an interesting telephone call from a fellow firewood seller today

i did have another very small time seller buy a few loads off me one year and take it to his customers. hes a pretty shady guy so i dont really know what the hell he was up to but he paid full price for the wood so i didnt care... $10 off for picking it up sounds reasonable to me, espically if...

There's no money in selling firewood

i think if you have to buy all the things to run a firewood business just to sell a few cords a year then its crazy. but for me it seems to work out well. theres not much going on in farming from nov. - mar. except for feeding cattle in the morning and evening. i have a tractor for other farming...

There's no money in selling firewood

took a load to a guy today whose son was there to direct me where to put it and pay me at the end. stoner was an understatement for this kid. one of the first things he said was "i bet you make a killing doing this! all you need is a saw and a truck." right...

    snow, cold, and unprepared customers

so for over a week its been under 20 degrees here and has snowed every single day. yes, i know you upper midwesterners are laughing now but were not used to it... several mornings around 0. naturally everyone wants firewood now. i espically love the folks who lie and tell me their driveway has...

    big ash rounds

i did. it wasnt as old as you'd think. i counted 115. this was from a clump of trees growing on a fencline and it is cleared land on either side. we have around 60" of rain a year and several feet of snow so trees get lots and lots of what they need to get big quick - espically in the open like...

    What kind of wood?

id say tulip poplar. the heart can be yellow, in older trees, or green in younger. it also sometimes has black or purple patches in the heart. if you start throwing purple sawdust you know thats it. a closer shot would go a long way...

    Wood ID

soft maple would be my guess but im not certain. not sure if the "poplar" you guys are talking about is what we have (yellow poplar or tulip tree) but its definatly not that. we dont have any true poplars so i dont know about those.
