id say tulip poplar. the heart can be yellow, in older trees, or green in younger. it also sometimes has black or purple patches in the heart. if you start throwing purple sawdust you know thats it. a closer shot would go a long way...

soft maple would be my guess but im not certain. not sure if the "poplar" you guys are talking about is what we have (yellow poplar or tulip tree) but its definatly not that. we dont have any true poplars so i dont know about those.

whenever i cut an ash i always think to myself "nice piece of ash" and smile. glad to see im not alone.
