    Scrounging Firewood (and other stuff)

Yesterday morning I awoke to the sound of a MS200T not too far away. “Probably another &^^%# maple,” I thought,” but after a shower and a cup of coffee, curiosity got the better of me and I walked across the street and down the alley and watched the tree crew from a respectful distance until one...

    Makita 6401 carb source

Thanks, I’ll keep eyes peeled for one.

    Makita 6401 carb source

Ah. Thanks for that, I thought the linkages were different. My apologies, OSN. Edit: confession time, all that for nothing, I pulled the carb, was able to reseat the L needle and retune from scratch, saw now starts, idles, zings right off idle. And it’s all clean! I’ll still hope to find...

    Makita 6401 carb source

Thank you, Doctor. I can get a replacement carb, about $140, from Jack’s Small Engines, and I guess the saw has earned it. I reckon if anything would strip it would be the cast aluminum (?) carb body rather than the steel screw. An interesting solution would be to tap the hole larger and machine...

    Makita 6401 carb source

I have an ex-HD rental 6401 that has been a great saw, except for idling issues. Always hard to keep it on the line between dying and the chain spinning at idle. Finally took a closer look and realized that the L screw appears to be stripped. If I push hard on the screw I can get it to catch and...

    Wood-Fired Electricity?

No, a ICE turbocharger uses energy from the expanding combustion gases exiting the cylinder, which is sealed by the intake valve(s) so the only place the exhaust can go is out the exhaust valve and into the pipe. A wood burner is essentially open to atmosphere on both ends, and uses the...

    Take my man card

Funny, black locust dries faster than oak for me. And splits pretty well, too. I've only done one honey locust, and it was harder to split than black locust. Much heavier wood, slower drying, and the bugs LOVE it. Much prefer black locust.

    Wouldn't mind having that lathe.

    Problems with Stink Bugs

Indoors, I take a couple inches of duck tape, stick the bug on the gummy side, fold them up like the mummy and throw them in the trash. No stink, appropriately cruel.

    Problems with Stink Bugs

Funny, they were bad last year and everybody said this year was going to be Biblical, but I've seen very few in the house, and none in the firewood.

    Why is this mildewing/molding?

I've had this happen on pin oak. It went away when the wood dried a bit. Soon as the sun hits it good and hard, the mold will be gone.

    Idiots

The Stihl dealer nearest me only has the green chain on display. You have to ask for the yellow, and he makes it sound like nitrogycerin. When I bought a saw from him (the only one from him), he wouldn't sell it with yellow chain. If you ask him, NON-safety chain is practically illegal.

    My firewood tools

I have a daughter who is a softball pitcher. Sure could use a room like that for the winter.

    they walk among us

I'm not saying the teachers are to blame. But there are teachers who just hand out the books and grade the papers according to the answers in the back of the book (which aren't always right), and teachers who use their heads and manage to teach around the garbage. My daughter's math teacher...

    Making firewood blocks

Perhaps not fully seasoned? Damper shut too far? When I have to noodle crotches or other unsplittable sections, I often cut slabs that will just fit in my Napoleon 1100. I don't burn them until they've seasoned a couple of years, and I make sure to start with a good hot stove and not turn the...

    they walk among us

When one of my daughters was in 3rd or 4th grade she was doing her math homework at the kitchen table, rounding and estimation. I looked at one problem and told her it wasn't right, that you can't round one number to the nearest 10 and the other to nearest 100. The way she had done it, the...

    Home Depot rental chain policy

When I got my HD Makita it came with a new bar and chain. Both garbage. The bar was bowed -- I pressed it straight a few times but it was welded that way, kept springing back. The chain was slow and soft, not worth sharpening. You'd get more use out of one decent chain from Bailey's than a...

Large Rounds / Too Heavy to move

One wedge is asking for it. : ) You need at least two. If possible I'd rather split than noodle, but you may feel differently and there are some rounds that it's no use trying to split anyway. I've had big maple rounds that were wet and mushy and twisty and would just swallow wedges, and then...

Large Rounds / Too Heavy to move

I second the maul and sledge recommendation. On really big ones, I'll use the saw to mill a kerf across the end where I want to split it. Just go down a couple of inches, makes it easier to start the wedge and it starts exerting splitting force right away. If I know I'm going into quarters...
