    Bugs and shag bark Hickory

Been doing some more research on line. This was good read:Wood-Boring Beetles in Homes Management Guidelines--UC IPM As was this:Insects from Firewood Looking at size of my holes, and grittiness of my crass, I may well have deathwatch instead of powderposts. Frustrating in that most info...

    Bugs and shag bark Hickory

Seems the critters only bore like crazy into my beloved shag bark splits. Ash, cherry, Mulberry and Walnut not a hole a one. Shag bark has literally piles of crass all around it after 8 months in shed Noticed they only go after splits that have one side with bark Suspect powder post beetles...

    Rounds versus splits

Question A 4X4X8 pretty closely stacked pile of unsplit rounds will yield more or less than a cord split and stacked ready to burn ????. Thought I saw a conversion here before, but cannot find again Thx

    Stump removal techniques? Need advice

Let 'er soak Cut a shallow 'bowl' on the clean top of the stump; like funnel described above fill with drain oil thinned with kero or old stale gas Keep topped off for a spell when last 'top off' is fully absorbed.... torch 'er off Have a cee-gar and watch the stump go up in smoke

    Punky wood

My old farmer pal loved to sell that kind of wood. Called it "yuppie wood" because it was so easy to get a good fire going when both come home from work late and tired Don't need boy scout fire starting skills with that stuff That outer inch is best 'starter' wood you will ever find

Soaking firewood in old used motor oil?

Exactly Works great and Costs nothing Some frugal old farmers do not even 'waste' kitty litter Sawdust or last sweep job of cement floor dust, or handful of sandy soil works OK too Only them 'city folk' would even think we are talking about using soaked logs or drip systems for...

    back puffing?

Am I being too simplistic in assuming that the cap pictured is designed to 'weathervane' so as to always keep the wind to the rear ???

Looking for a new wood stove.

Jotul F600 Firelight heats my 150 year center hall old farmhouse very satisfactorily for past 8 years. Had one of original Vermont Castings Defiants before that.... circa 1975 model Secondary burn and increased efficiency of F600 was like night and day

    trees from seed.

Black Walnuts grow just great from seed. Squirrels manage to plant at least a dozen or so for me every year in my mulched areas. Have two nice fencerows (well away from lawns) lined with transplants.

    Coupling Smashola!

My favorite 'monkey piss' around Farm is "Kroil" About 20 years ago, I needed an odd hub for a 69 Ford Dumper Went to Junkie pal, and he found one axle deep in mud and rusted like you cannot believe He got out, dug mud away, gave it good shot of Kroil, and a couple whacks with Ball Peen...

    Barn Stove Decision

Fer me If'n I already had an idle box stove; that is choice one If'n I was gonna make a barrel stove, a single barrel model would be plenty for what you describe. Just put a layer of tile or sand on bottom, a good damner in the pipe and fire 'er up

    Burning unseasoned red oak

Agree with all above cautions about resulting creosote Another BIG consideration for me is the *wasted heat* when burning wet wood; especially oak A significant amount of the heat of burning must be used to remove the moisture above the beloved 20% number In effect you are taking one of...

36 feet of double wall pipe is gonna require quite a bunch of $$$$ Would have to do more research to see if that expense would ever be cost effective Are you considering the sealed or the vented double wall ??
