Dilemma

Poulan 4000 or Echo CS-6700 (price is the same)

Both are similar in displacement.

Wondering if there is any distinct advantage (one over the other).

I have quite a few Echo products...and they are well built and reliable.

I've never run a 4000 so I don't know how they do. My 3800 (slightly smaller) does not impress me. It really doesn't do much more than my 3400 (or least that is my impression). The 4000 might be different.

Anyone have experience with either saw. Thanks, Flint.

I have a 3700 (61cc) and an Echo 6700. The Poulan will out cut the 6700 all day long. The 4000 would be faster than the 3700. The 6700 is also a heavy saw for the power it puts out.
I would trade the Echo 6700 for a 4000 so fast you wouldn't see it happen. I guess the 6700 has a little advantage as far as parts from the dealer availability goes.

I like Poulans. They have been kicked around and talked down so much it has made them very affordable. People think they are worthless......cool. This one was listed for $15, "runs good". Yup started on the second pull. I didn't even try to get it for less. I am just tickled to be ably to bring it home to its family. :msp_wub:

Well just don't say too much about it!!!

There used to be free Poulans everywhere until Nik started this thread and the price on a BUNCH of them has gone up considerably.
I've had people tell me that this site can't possibly dictate prices across the entire country, to which I say Bulls hit!!!
You should have seen the spike in Wildthing prices when Ed suggested a WT build off!

When I first got here in '08 the countervibe series was just a bunch of more "Pull-ons" to most people.
Mark, Gregg, Steve, and I started talking about how well they were built and how far ahead of their time they were and a guy from Texas named BrianS did a complete rebuild of one and posted it here step by step.

The rest is History!

3400's doubled in price on eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-bay in just a few weeks time, and 3700's and 4000's shot through the roof.

A sexy pair

Of Poulan's....:msp_ohmy:

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I had a great Memorial Day Weekend! Had the pleasure of a visit from rms61moparman (Mike & his wife Sheila) over the weekend. Brought along his S25AV with some new Sthil LP chain. That sucker cuts!! I'm here to say.

Had to get my S25DA out too. They are just about identical, cept for the rubber AV mount, and it does make a difference. We did run a couple saws Sat. afternoon, His S25AV & my 5200. (sorry didn't have a camera with us at the time, no pics.) Thats makes for quite a pair of saws, lol One Poulan extreme to the other.

Did manage to get a couple pics of us Poulan nuts & our S25's before he left. Notice them sexy hats too. LOL I had a GREAT weekend!!! Got a short video too....LOL

Gregg,

Looks like a good time!

I've had people tell me that this site can't possibly dictate prices across the entire country, to which I say Bulls hit!!!

I've had that discussion a few times with AS members. Seems EVERY time there's a lengthy thread about a certain saw model, the eBay price spikes. I agree with you Mike 100%.

He is as good as anyone to blame!!!
He has shoulders wide enough to take the blame!!!!

Nik, you can look at as I would: "There's a very fine line between credit and blame."

Agreed!! :msp_thumbsup: But I give Nik a lot more credit than blame. If Nik hadn't started this Poulan thread, I probably wouldn't even be on here any more. I have learned a bunch from the the fine folks on this thread. Like Mike stated earlier, when I joined AS, there was a post about BrianS's 3400 rebuild. Thats what got me hooked. It was tough at first to ask or find any worthwhile advice, without receiving the wrath of Poulan bashing that goes on.

If it wasn't for Nik and the Poulan Thread, there is a long list of folks that I probably would never have met, and got to know as friends. Nik was the one that convinced me that I needed to go to a GTG. Was at Eric's gtg in Ind. that I first met Nik & Mike. Best move I ever made. So I don't blame Nik for the prices of Poulan's rising.. LOL Maybe they are just getting up to where they should be. I guess it depends on whether your buying or selling as to if higher prices are good or bad. I never sold one. LOL

Gregg,

We had a TREMENDOUS time this weekend Gregg!!!
Thanks again for the wonderful hospitality you and your family showed us.

We stopped by to see Andre and Nik and his family as we went through Cincinnati, and went to Skyline for chili.
Last weekend with Super3 and Ericjeeper and this weekend with Gregg and family, Andre and the Teslas have been just what the Dr. would have ordered for my outlook and R&R!!!

Mike

Back in '04 when I joined AS folks who came here to discuss Poulan saws received little support, were quite often ridiculed, and eventually left AS. Most Poulan saws brought very low $$ on eBay, and Craftsman saws were nearly worthless (at the time most ASers wouldn't give a Craftsman 5.2 a first look).

I don't know how much influence this thread has had on how Poulan, and rebadged Poulan, saws are viewed. It sure is nice to see that the Poulan support is strong, the bashing is minimal, and the bashers usually receive a cyber beating.

Glad you guys had a great weekend! Makes me miss the Poulan kinship we have when we're all able to come there for a gtg, and be treated to the hospitality that Gregg's family always pours out. Have a great Memorial holiday! :yourock:

Steve, You hit that on the head..The Kinship (Poulan or otherwise). Most of the fellas on here just can't imagine what its like to sit around the kitchen table drinking coffee and discussing saws and other important stuff, LOL is like with the likes of 67Mustang, rms61moparman, Igpoe, Super3, and myself. That was a treat for me!!! Just hope we can repeat it sometime. To bad ModifiedMark & CBFarmall weren't here that morning. One of the true great moments in my dull life..LOL

Gregg,

Nice looking saws. I've never seen them in that color. Interestingly, I have only seen one 25 come up for sale in my area. There are lots of 2000's and mostly 2300CVA's around.

It depends on what you are going to do with it. The 6700 has a great automotive type air filter, adjustable oiler with a manual pump, and a easy adjustable idle and a chain brake. They are heavy and a little slow and run forever. If I was going to run it 8 hours a day I would grab the Echo.

No heavy duty use for any of my saws. The filter on a 4000 is better than what is on similar models (3400,3700,3800) but it probably doesn't matter...since I rarely run a saw more than a few hours at a time and ALWAYS clean them and have them ready to go the next time I pick it up.

Adjustable oiler would be a nice feature. Both saws sport a manual pump...which I am used to. I have never had a need for a chain brake....so nothing gained there (for me). Weight would not be too much a factor. I don't do much tree felling (mostly bucking firewood or clearing a tree off a road).

Also, I'm a big fella and while no one wants to carry around a saw with 'unnecessary' weight, I usually don't do enough cutting to tire me out. Quality build and longevity are important to me though.

One thing I greatly appreciate in a saw is enough torque to be able to power through a cut. I HATE having a saw bog down when you push on it a bit...or you can't quite get out of a cut before it gets 'pinched' (technique I know). I couldn't care less how FAST a saw will turn a chain, if doesn't have 'grunt' too...it is worthless to me.

If the Echo is widely thought to be less powerful than the Poulan...then I would dismiss it immediately. I don't mean less powerful "for the weight", the weight doesn't bother me. But less powerful overall would be a de-merit.

If I only wanted to play and cut some wood for myself every once in a while the Poulan would be my choice. I love the Poulans but would not want to grind one up in day to day use. They are not that easy to find. Your 3800 should run better than your 3400.

In a normal year...I will cut down maybe a half dozen hardwoods, cut some firewood and drop a couple dozen 'standing' dead pines (12" to 28"). Once in a while a big Water Oak will blow over (some will be 5' across) and I really need to get a single 'big' saw for those, but I don't cut as much wood as most of you guys and NEVER just for fun. :D Whatever daily life on the ranch dictates.

My 3400 and 3800 have identical compression (about 135) but I swear I can't tell any difference (in the wood). I run the same bar length and chain on them and I know 'physics' demands the larger saw outperform the smaller. No doubt it does...but it must be marginal (or my perception is dull).

I don't see the point in having two saws so closely matched, since I am not trying to collect them. I like the poulans, the 3400 I bought new in 1979-1980, but I am trying to settle on about four saws.

My S25 is definitely a 'keeper', it has got to have one of the best power to weight/size ratios of any of the Poulan's ever built.

I don't have much need for a 50ish CC saw (or smaller) for a midsize. The 3400 & 3800 are adequate but I don't need both, so I am thinking about a 4000 to cover that slot and then give the others to my nephew.

I have a good strong running 4900 (77 cc)...it is another saw that really puts out the power. I will be keeping it for sure.

Lastly, I would like to pick up a 'big' saw (90+ cc) that will run a 36" bar (with authority) for those times when a big tree blows down. The last one was pretty tiring using my 4900. Unfortunately...I will have look beyond the Poulan line to fill that niche. Yeah, I know there is there is the 5500 & 6000...(those are basically Sachs-Dolmars) ....and there is virtually NO chance of me finding a good one.

I would like to stay with the Poulan line....but I am not a person who is 'brand loyal'. A good saw is a good saw regardless who makes it.

If you guys think the 4000 is the way to go for my midsize saw...then that is what I will do.

Thank you in advance...for your replies,

Flint.
