Personally I think the chrome bore bare piston is a superior design. However I've seen some 3400 countervibes with a ton of hours on them. Why they tried chrome piston bare bore idk.

Cylinders probably had a hard coating of some type, I know some 2 strokes have a coating in the bore and can't/ shouldn't be honed.

It's a common technology. The alloy used is a high silicon (17%) aluminum alloy. Slippery stuff. They stand up very well and are used in a number of engines as well as piston compressors and brake cylinders.
You will have to wait a long time to wear one out.
 
Nikasil is like chrome but stronger, however some bores are literally just aluminum. And the piston is plated
 
So I was able to get the two new to me 5200s on the work bench today. I gave them both thorough look over. Each has some minor issues but I think I can fix both. Both cylinders look great. One piston also looks great. The other has a spot with some minor scoring but does not seem deep. The other one has an issue with the trigger lock. I was able to start the one with the trigger lock issue. It sounds MEAN. It's also vibrating some and there is some wear on the flywheel like it's rubbing so I didn't rev it much or run it very long. A quick compression test came back with 165 but the saw wasn't really warmed up.
 
Check flywheel nut and check crank bearings for play.

I thought the same exact thing, Steve. The weird part is the crank bearings on both sides feel perfect. Not a bit of play. The flywheel nut is tight as well. The rub marks on the flywheel are very minimal and there doesn't seem to be any rubbing currently. My guess is at some point the bearings had worn and caused the rubbing but the bearings were replaced at some point. The saw feels strong as hell. I'll have to tear into it and inspect everything more thoroughly when I have some time. Both are definitely well used saws but it looks like everything is there. They just need some work
 
Man this is a big strong saw. It has a 28" bar on it now but it could pull a 36" bar if I needed to. That's why I wanted one. I don't typically need a bar that large but the times I've needed one, it would have been nice to have a big 85cc torque monster. I can't wait to bring it back to its past glory
 
Now your talking I've got a new 32" for mine when it's done. They don't make em like those anymore. Stout, heavy, loud, a man's tool.
 
Have you pin pointed the vibration, bad mount or something. Check everything that moves for play, sounds like something is loose or worn for it to vibrate real bad. Unless a mount is grounded out from motor to chassis. Your lucky to find (2) Two beast. );

Have a question for you S25 fans. I can't get the chain to stop turning. Sprocket moves freely with the chain off but will turn when the saw is running whether the chain is on or not.. I've cleaned the brass bearing in the sprocket and also the crank end. Any ideas?
 
How worn is the sprocket on this saw? I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem, the chain keeps going tight when the saw runs. It's a poulan 2300. I've read it can be the chain is jumping out of the worn spots or it can be lack of bar oil. I know the oiler works, as it tends to dump 3/4 of the oil out before it even seens 2 minutes of work. Maybe thats another problem. Just leaks out the oil tube when its tipped over. So...any soltuions to these woes?

It's pretty worn and likely needs replacing. Not sure if it's the cause but installing a new one would be best.
 
Yes, the chain and bar are 3/8LP. Local shop doesnt have the sprocket so I guess its online, and also a clutch removal tool. Any idea on it dumping bar oil when it is turned sideways or running? Seems to only come out the oiling tube.

Your clutch springs are wore.
