It'll do it, hell...they used to haul old-growth out of these hills on trucks with less power than that, but will be really underpowered by modern standards.

It's probably overweight, but one of my tree-biz buddies runs a Dodge 3500 with a dump bed(8' though) with the 5.9 common rail and a 6 speed manual...4wd too. He also tows equipment with it...chipper or skidsteer in a dump trailer. He needs to put an exhaust brake on it IMO, but it's actually a good little tree truck. Just another option IMO, although a lot pricier than what you're probably looking at.

A lot of school busses had 8.3's in them, they have siamese cylinders and you had to be careful not to overheat those diesels! School buss' were stop and go, so they held up fairly good in those.

Burt Carver in Soldotna had a bunch of them!

I amended my post.
Theys are naturally aspirated oil burners. If you want a truck that age, look for a Ford with 300 inline 6 or same thing in Chevy ( I think 296) I've had 3 of the 300s. Best engine Ford ever made
There something really wrong if you think a straight 6 is the best engine ford ever made.

It's not snowing(barely) for once, hopefully it melts some of the snow off my property. My neighbor recorded 62" of snowfall last week and then there was another 12-18" of snow that fell after I talked to him. Luckily, it's compacted a lot since then,

My other neighbor's interior walls and ceiling started cracking from the snow load, so I thought it was a good idea to clean some snow off the roof before it picked up all the weight of the rain that came in tonight. Actually a bunch of stories up here of roofs starting to fail from the snow. Someone's garage up the street even catastrophically failed...roof caved in and knocked the walls down outwards.

This one is for sale also. GM dump bed. 24,000 miles! 5.7 gas engine with a standard transmission. new deck and framework. Not sure that's enough engine for a bed load of wood or gravel while also trailering 10k to 12k lbs? 🤷

Could be worse my uncle willy had a 3500 with a 305 4 speed manual in It..he had it geared with 4.88s. Wouldn't go a stitch over 50mph but it would pull a mountain.
So you think I should pass on this then?
8.2 "fuel pincher"

Run, they liked ro crack between the cylinders. About one of the few times I'd reccomend a 3208 cat, so long as it didn't have the slave metering fuel system.

Some of the newer pickups have quite a payload and haul rating. Even in the late 90's seems all the big 3 started to up the ratings. That 12f250 we had at the township was rated to tow 18k lbs. That's 4k lbs more then my 96.
How about converting this into a flat bed for hauling and towing?
7.3 PS F450 SD standard transmission.
Couldn't go wrong with that combo. Pretty reliable engines in stock or slightly modified form. Had a few issues but nothing terrible.
KK check the oil pan on the 7.3 they were prone to rot and a absolute disaster to change

Keep it plugged in anytime the temp is below 35

Good power, but like anything else, they have their drawbacks
X2 on that, seems like 10ish years ago everyone and their brother with a 7.3l needed an oil pan. One of the local shops had it down to a science, in and out in 2 hours. Dontnknow how they did it, but you showed up with a pan held together with hopes, dreams and bubble gum and left with a brand new pan under the engine.
Get a flex shaft grinder with a foot pedal, you can get them from Harbor Freight, Amazon, FLeabay, etc for less than $100. The footpedal operation is 1000x easier to use than something like a dremel. You can also get right-angle attachments for the flex shaft, that will fit in most cylinders. The right-angle attachment for a dremel doesn't fit in most cylinders.

Careful about getting into porting saws. My journey started when I was just trying to clean up a aftermarket cylinder on an 044 I rebuilt...fast forward a few years and now I have 2 lathes and a mill.
I use a flex shaft dremmel but wish I could justify a foredom or similar. Just don't do enough porting to make it worthwhile.

Yeah folks say the same about the slant six from dodge. I think there's something to be said for an engine that doesn't make enough power to tear itself up. Probably why the 7.3 has such a following. Same goes for anything with en engine, snowmobiles.. anything with a 340 or 377 still runs after 30+ years, anything with a 700 is on its second crank or parted out. Outboards, rarely see big motors from the 60-70's but lots of sub 40hp from the 50's on through still chugging along. I have a 62 a 69 and my new motor is a 1983. And it's the 22hp 1946 Allis Chalmers chugging away down any one of our roads right now

The slant six must have really been something back in the 60's and early 70's before emissions got to it. I had an 82' half-ton dodge with a slant six and it was just about useless. Heck, it wasn't even good on gas.

Hey, I resemble that remark!

Maybe it's because it's the fire service and not DMV or the building department, but I mostly work with good folks. That being said, it's nearly impossible to get rid of a turd, we just try to make their lives difficult at work.

The biggest thing that irks me with government work is the red tape...I'm constantly trying to improve our facilities, equipment, etc, but the bureaucratic process makes it impossible to ever accomplish what is needed. After the inevitable failure, you get salt rubbed in the wounds, because the boss just throws more on your plate...there are 2 different sets of expectations for people like myself versus the window-licker crowd. Hence why I just try to disappear into the woods any chance I get and go cut and burn stuff...at least I can get results that way.
Like going by a road crew doing road work. Six workers and two cops. One guy is working, five are holding shovels or watching and the two cops are texting instead of watching traffic which is what they are getting paid for. Sad state of affairs going on today.

The major fault on it was the distributor shaft gear. They use to snap in half. I changed more of them in the early 70's than I can remember.

@Kodiak Kid 7.3L Turbo Diesel for the win. Get the repair records on any trucks you are looking at. The receipts tell a story. How it was maintained to what you can expect will need attention soon. At least a couple of us on here have a lot of experience owning 7.3's, so ask away.
A friend of mine had a 7.3 non turbo. He used to say he wished it had a turbo so that it could get out of it's own way. He said I get where I am going and it goes my trailer. I just wish it could get there faster.

In the early days of logging they didn’t have chain binders. They’d save a log or two for the top to take the slack out, they’d lay it on the chains.
Interesting.
There are good saws, even some that aren’t made in Sweden are ok
Noone is disagreeing with that, but everyone knows all the awesome ones come from Sweden, the while world knows that, the whole universe knows that  .
That's a bummer. I hope you didn't get charged fir it!
I didn't, but I did get a little talking to by the boss. I didn't take it too seriously, it's not like they ever trained me to run the lift or load a cart on it, so what do they expect. I probably won't do it again.
Someone had asked if it was an insurance claim, probably could have been as there's quite a bit of value in the plants and the rack, but they're self insured so they're eating it.
I kinda got a redo on that stop today, they put it on my route again (it's not normal one of my stops) and I got to "drop" another rack off there lol. It went smoothly today though :).
Anybody know where chipper is? Everyone is more chipper when he is here.
Here I am .
Running his wood chipper, of course.
Funny story about that. I have very little experience with chippers. When I first got on here I would have people send me PM's asking questions about their chippers, I would always wonder why they were asking me, then one day I figured it out :dumb:. As it says in my signature, "I may be slow, but I'm not stupid " ;).

I hope @chipper1 didn't hit his head. He seems to be repeating himself.
