OK, I thought most of the W-pro chains were Carlton, or a Carlton/Oregon mix of parts.

There has also been negative comments about Windsor chains here lately, as I remember it.

I have never tried Windsor, but has been given a couple of 13" .050 .325 ones to try on the 339xp - I will report on them when I have tried them.

I've never heard anything like this Troll. Windsor Chain has always been Windsor Chain and nothing else. Oregon has very recently acquired Windsor as one of their holdings, however, Windsor has never shared Orgon parts. I've also talked to Windsor HQ in TN as recently as 10 days ago over a question that I had and as part of the conversation was told that Windsor will continue to manufacturer their own stuff independent of Oregon. We'll see? I've used both products (Windsor vs. Oregon) and I personally regard Windsor as the superior of the two in both their saw chain and guide bars. There's nothing second rate about Windsor. They're also competitively priced.

Just out of curiosity, what neg comments are you referring to? Are they posted on this site? I'd like to read them. Personally, I'd take a Windsor guide bar over an Oregon any day of the week! No comparison...that's precisely the reason why I got rid of the Dolmar bars.

As far as the Woodsman Pro stuff...don't know anything about it. Never seen it. I've always bought straight Windsor badged products. I like them a lot!

Windsor Brand Chain has used Oregon cutters on their own chassis for a few years now and the Speed tip bars are manufactured in the Oregon bar plant.

That's interesting Scott...and you could be right? But, that's not what I was told by Windsor. I am curious about it though; I think I'll give them a call and try and find out the down and dirty. Nonetheless, I really like their offerings! Thanks.

I thought your WoodsmanPro was Carlton? I prefer Windsor chain myself, but can never find it. Is there a special designation for the Windsor made chain, is it the X?

Most WoodsmanPRO chain is made by Carlton, but our X-series is made by Windsor.

Windsor is owned by Oregon cutting systems and the cutter of the chain listed above is actually made in the Oregon chain plants, but the rest of the chain is manufactured and assembled in Milan, TN.

I got the same answer via email about 5 months ago from Windsor. I don't like the 33 series chain from Oregon so I moved to the J series of Windsor whenever I can find it. My choices of chain are #1 Windsor, #1.5 Carlton, and all the rest is the same to me. I have a Stihl chain that I bought a couple months ago, but for what I do, it isn't worth the extra money. I'm not saying it is a bad chain, before all of you stihl heads go nuts, it is just overpriced for what I do. I don't go through enough chains in a year to see the difference (too many saws running, LOL).

Thanks NBailey, I will take a look at your site and keep that in mind.

Sweettttttt

That rocks Jim. Glad to see you got'em. Awaiting pics when they are in some wood... Cheers eh?

All right fellas...hopefully this will shed a little bit of light on the Windsor question. I just got off the phone with Paul Wade at Windsor who's in charge of their B&C manufacturing. This is what he had to say:

Windsor is not owned by Oregon Cutting Systems; rather, they are both sister companies that are both owned by Blount Inc. He went on to say that Windsor makes their own cutters on all their chains with the exception of their 3/8" pitch APL cutter, which is actually an Oregon LG cutter. The rest are Windsor. Regarding the Speed Tip bar; he said it is not an Oregon bar...it is a Windsor bar and always has been. The Windsor Speed Tip and Oregon Power Match bars are made in the same plant in order to maximize efficiency and because they're sister companies. Thaty being said; the bar designs are exclusive to each company's line and do not share design cues. In so far as the laminate bars are concerned, Mr. Wade stated that there's basicly no difference in any of them...it's just a matter of what you want to run.

NBailey...as I understand what Mr. Wade was saying, your Woodsman PRO is a in house brand so to speak and Windsor does in fact manufacture / supply certain chain to you. I've never had anything but good experience with Windsor...is the case with your customers that have purchased this product from you?

This helped clear up a few things for me, I hope it did for others.

Hell, I could have told you that, and would have if I knew you were that interested. Blount also "makes" the ICS concrete chainsaw which has an Efco powerhead.

Yep...I'm kinda the same way. Except, on all my STIHL's I run nothing but STIHL chain...you can't beat it IMO. On everything else, I run Windsor in either their 50JL, 70APL, or 50R form. I"m not saying anything bad against Oregon chain...I like it and I have a lot of loops of 20LP, 72LG/LGX, 91VX, and 91VS chains. I just choose Windsor first. Although, as I just found out...Windsor's APL (chisel only) chain uses an Oregon LG cutter...learn something new everyday! That's the only component that comes from Oregon in all Windsor's offerings as stated by Windsor. Windsor bars...that's another story...I like them hands down.

I hear yah dude! :ices_rofl:

I am with you on the Windsor bars, I have the speed tip on all the saws that get used a lot. Next to Windsor, I like the Tsumara bars (Total) with the replaceable sprocket. The design of the Windsor sprocket seems to hold up better when compared to Oregon, but this has only been my experience.

What a mess....:jawdrop: :greenchainsaw:

I think I stay with Stihl and Oregon chains, and know what I get - over here I don't really have much other options anyway........

I cannot respond per say because I spend very little time on the phone directly with customers these days. I can say that our purchases have gone up with all Windsor products, and I have yet to see any issues with returns on their product line. We only offer the 3/8" chisel version right now, in .050, .058 and .063 gauges and also in skiptooth configuration.
