Wanted some opinions on B&C for my new project saw. 026 PRO

Specs
026
44.7 mm bore
Int 76
Ext 102
Transfers 118
Squish .017
(Above specs recommended by Mastermind)
Comp 185 psi
Timing advance .020 keyway.

Saw came with a 20" .325 when I got it.

I have a 18" .325 on my 028S I can flip. I also got a nice 3/8 16" Rollomatic on the way.

My thoughts are to go 16" 3/8 RS chain. I'd have to change the rim sprocket.

If I go 16" 3/8, which sprocket should I go with.

Thanks.

If you are going with the 16" 3/8 bar, get a 7T rim. I have a 24" 3/8 bar on mine right now and it seems to pull it pretty well. I tried it in a 28" diameter maple log and was only able to bog it down once. I tried to big it down just to see what it could do.

I have a 16" Picco setup but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

I have 4 or 5 026's and none will pull a 24" bar/chain in oak. My 261 will pull an 18" but struggles if buried. The 026's are happiest with .325 x .063 on 16" bars. None are muff modded because I dont like the additional noise. If I need a 20-24" bar and chain, I go get a saw designed to run them, usually an 044.

Or an operator with low expectations regarding performance and/or skip chain......:omg:

I got the 24" bar and chain for my Husqvarna 181 and just wanted to see what the 026 would do. I was pleasantly surprised. It was not as fast as the Husky but it pulled the skip chain ok. It was just an experiment to see how much it would take before bogging down. The oiler wasn't keeping up but it was also 20 degrees, so I only cut one cookie.

I'm waiting for slightly warmer weather to try out my 16" Picco setup.

You may have a hard time finding an 8pin small spline. I do believe they're out there, but memory is telling me it's hard to come by for some reason.

Im thinking about going 16" 3/8 with a 7 pin. ?8 pin on this modded saw?

How big do the sprockets come?

I doubt a 3/8x8 is a good idea, even with a modded saw - and finding one that fits the clutch drum will be a challenge as well.

Much larger ones are made - but they aren't generally availiable. We are talking "costum" made pin-type rims than, as with 3/8x8 for the mini and small 7-sline drums.

There are 3/8 8T picco but I'm not sure about the regular 3/8 in the mini spline. I can check the IPL to see if there was a part number.

unless it is an unusually strong saw i would stay with 16" on it. I have had half a dozen 026, 260's and was never really impressed by them even with 16" .325.

My two 026's were unimpressive until the muffler mod. Really felt like they woke up.

My 026 had 3 holes in the front cover which became one long opening after meeting a dremel. It seems a bit stronger than my 024 Super with the stock muffler.

CedarShark knows wht he is talking about:
"... The 026's are happiest with .325 x .063 on 16" bars... "
--------------------
I have an 026 Pro and someday I might mount a .325 x .063 chain on the 18" bar I bought for it. But, I'd rather reserve that 18" bar for my 028 AV Super. So, now it pulls .325 x .063 on its original 16" bar, perhaps the ideal combination for this saw, primarily because it never complains or breaths hard.

Jus' tryin to be helpful.. One of the guys on ebay has a 30" bar on an MS250!
He's probably also loading a full cord of wood on a 1991 Datson.

No joking on the 18" bar. I'll install it prior to my next small bucking mission. I'd love to see if it can handle it. The problem is that will likely be the last I'll ever run it with a 16" bar.

16 or 18, neither will overmatch a healthy 026 Pro. I had one with an 18 inch bar and the hardest Osage/hedge was no problem. SHARP CHAIN!!
