No sweat. Nothing is going anywhere.

My advice is not to rush into the taping until you have enough time to think about what you want to do and do it safely. So don't feel pressured to cram it in by this weekend.

But some of us do look forward to it when it does work out.
 
Chaps to be cut

i remember going to a "sawdust" party at the local tool shop several years back.
Tool reps would bring their wares and show them off. Someone at the time, forget the manufacturer, was making a table saw (maybe they had mitre saw too?) that would dead stop if it hit flesh. They demonstrated with a hotdog.
I think it still took a nick, but wouldn't saw that baby off.

Not sure of the technology, but it would be cool if they could apply it to chainsaws (without too much added weight, etc...).

I need some chaps, i like beer too much.

I have also seen the sawstop demo live. It's definitely more bottom puckering when you see it live compared to video. The stopping process explodes an ally block into the blade but doing this on a CS would probably snap the chain. Exploding a kevlar fibre filled cartride/wad would probably work but unfortunately the "detection of skin method" does not work with on green wood. If this could be solved that would make CSs a whole lot safer.

I have been told the inventor has demoed this tablesaw stop with his own finger. Makes me a bit shocky just thinking about it.

That is correct but he did not drive his finger forcefully into the blade, he gently touched the spinning teeth with the back of a finger!

When they do the live demo they place the hotdog on a piece of wood and drive the wood thru the blade at about the same speed as you realistically saw a piece of wood. Some circular saw accidents happen when people slip and their hand drives hard into the blade. When I asked them to demo that they would not do it. My guess is that a tooth or two will still penetrate your hand under these conditions!

Thanks for the test and videos.

How hard was it to clean up the saw afterward? :D

As for results, I would much rather have my leg looking like the inside of those chaps as opposed to the outside of those chaps. With a relatively minor cut like that (all things considered) I could still make it home - without the chaps I am likely done for.

Cool. Was that the square chain? (If so it was new RSLK and fresh off the grinder.)

I wonder if the bottom cut would have been a little worse further toward the end if the bar, but I'm pretty impressed. The top of the bar test was esp impressive in terms of the chaps helping.

The damage from those cuts without the chaps would have been horrific. A score for Labonville.

Clean up?

Clean up was a bugger. It took me about 20-30 minutes to get all those fine fibers out of everything after each cut. The last test clogged the tip of the bar so bad that I going to have to replace the tip. The tip is so jambed full that I can not even turn it and there are no more fibers showing.

I have not replaced the tip before and assume it is a pretty straight forward process:
Drill 3 old rivets, replace tip, pound in 3 new rivets.

Any other tidbits for replacement?

I'll send you $20 for a new tip (seriously). It saved me a tip, because I would have had to test it myself otherwise.

Thanks again for doing the test and sharing. My blood pressure is up a little just watching all that wicked sharp chain biting.

edit: Interesting that it was the second cut (lower bar rather than top of bar) that jammed the tip. Maybe the tip jamming is part of why the chain stopped so quickly.

Great video, thanks for doing it. I feel my $10 was well spent. My only suggestion would be to start a separate, as in new thread which points out that there is a new video of this test, I think a lot of people don't check this thread cause it has been a while. Thanks for doing this. JR
