I've been trying to sell a few of my saws on ebay so I can afford to keep the others and perhaps add to my collection. Anyway, I've been watching saw prices on ebay and something doesn't add up.. You can generally get high prices from Stihl, Husky, Dolmar and sometimes Echo but the rest don't seem to have a consistent price. I saw a Poulan XXV (non running) go for about $150 while others generally go for about $20. A perfectly good running Poulan 2000 went for just over $10. I had a Homelite XL12 sell for over $90 and I put a nicer XL12 on there and didn't get nearly as much. I realize it's an auction but can't believe the variation in prices.

I think a lot of it has to do with how many saws of the same make & model are listed at the same time, & when the auctions end. A lot times auctions on eBay don't see a lot of action until the last few minutes, but I've seen auctions that started with a bang, but then stalled when the same make & model of saw showed up in other listings.

Good Scenario: I list a Jonsered 630, and no one else lists one to compete with my listing. The folks wanting the 630 have to bid against each other to try to win my auction.

Bad Scenario: I list a Jonsered 630, and then several other sellers list 630s in auctions that end after my auction. The folks wanting a 630 aren't compelled to bid as high on my 630 as they have other 630s to bid on.

I have bought perfect running Echo's for 12 bucks and seen others of the same model that don't run for $175.00 I don't know either but it must be the mood the buyers are in. So i wish everyone would get moody again so i can buy some cheap saws...Bob

I watch eBay like a hawk for deals. The only problem with that is every great deal I find... I buy... now I have too many projects and not enough money for parts.

Sometimes I think people are having their friends bid up their actions because the price is twice or more then I would pay for it. But the opposite is true, the other day an all together but non running Husky 2100 went for $90. I should have jumped on that but I was thinking that I need parts for the 371 and the 394 projects.

My experience with Ebay is there is big demand & high prices for a handfull of saws (mostly favored here) and low demand & prices on just about everything else. Time of year is also a factor, with Oct thru mid-Dec being the peak for high prices.

Of course the main reason for the high used prices is the Manufacturer's control over new prices. The only products I can think of with such a strong Manufacturer influence is Fly Fishing Rods and Reels.

reminds me of an old friend, spent $25,000 on a hotrod and was scared to drag race it cause he couldn't afford the parts if it broke....

as for ebay prices, it just depends on the demand of the item and keep in mind sometimes you have a few guys that refuse to lose the auction so they get in to a bidding war and drive the price up plus you also have crooks that use false ID's to shill bid driving the price up..

It is very inconsistant. I sold a CLEAN great-running Super EZ on there for 31.00 a few months ago. Of course the buyer was happy, but others go alot higher. True that if it's a Stihl or Husky, you can safely start it at 1.00, and most of the time, it will do good. I have learned to start the bids on the cheap saws at what I have in them, but if you know you have a good one, 1.00 will start it off for a decent finish.

Careful with those low starts, it recently cost me $12 to unload a poulan parts saw.

On a lot of my sales...if a person walked up to me and asked if I'd take $20 for a great running Poulan XXV with a new bar and chain, carb kit and fuel lines, I'd just walk away, insulted, but you can't do that on ebay. What I've been doing is starting the bid at the least I'd take for the saw and not worrying if it doesn't sell. There's free listing until Jan 6 so it doesn't cost anything if it doesn't sell.

You just never know with ebay.

I bought a new MS460, had it just over one year.
It looked like new when I sold it on ebay.
But it sold for around $25 more than I had give for
it but I sold power head only, no bar and chain.

Some Stihl dealers will not sell a "Pro level saw" or yellow chain unless you are professional or trained to use it. Ebay does not require nothing but money.

I agree I think some of the have more than one account and just bid on it them self I liked it back when you could actually see who was placing to bid not just a fake user name on the bid history

bought several project saws this summer when demand was low. made some great buys on a couple of 372's. Now I've been looking and haven't found a deal for a while. I think a lot of it is time of year that your buying or selling. I would never sell a saw in the summer on e-bay. You take a beating in the summer selling a saw but it's a good time to pick some up at a cheaper price.

You're probably right about the "shill" bidding, which of course is illegal but ebay doesn't police it because they make more money with higher bids. I haven't resorted to that practice but I did quit starting my bids at .99 cents for fear that it might be the only bid. I sold "parts saws" last year..this year I don't have many of them and have been selling good saws. Problem is, they don't bring much more than parts saws did and I have more time and money invested in this year's saws. Been selling mostly Homelites and Poulans.

Now is not a good time to sell on there, IMHO(too close to Christmas). After Christmas, I may put a few on. Somebody told me that starting in 2011, if you sell over ??$$ amount on there, Big Brother will be sending you a tax form. I'd like to know if that's true. Anybody heard this?

Have you been looking? The name brand saws are bringing really good money right now.IMO I don't think christmas slowed down too many buyers. However the number of saws has went way up, maybe people selling there saws for some christmas money?
