I'm still a fair greenhorn to this game, but I do follow these posts with much interest as time passes.

The only meaningful contribution I have at this point? A comment about your take on the shipping for that ebay auction:

I'm surprised you guys find $45 a rip-off, and also surprised someone got a chainsaw shipped for $20.

Having said that, I am in Canada, where everything does cost a tad more.

If I could get a chainsaw shipped from the states for $45, I wouldn't blink (if the deal was right, mind you).

Seems I've paid that much to get a rugged laptop shipped to me, as well as a distributor for one of my old Fords... I hate to see what a chainsaw would cost me to get shipped... thankfully CAD has been managed quite well.

Happy New Year!

$20-30 seems to be around the norm, for me, Lord knows I've bought enough of em.:dizzy: Sometimes, a little less, sometimes more. I recently sent a MiniMac Eager Beaver engine to a guy in California, thinking it wouldn't be much for shipping. Turns out it cost me $17+ change, sent from the post office.

That is the normal price for one around here. Add another $75.00 to it if it had a bow. 160psi is not bad. Should last for another 25 years. By the way I put together a 4200 that had about 175-180. I just got my 5200 bow saw back together. Really are fine pieces of equipment.

Shipping is not too outrageous. I figure my time and materials when shipping. I usually add $10.00 to the shipping cost. So shipping that saw would cost around $45.00 to ship to Washington state from Augusta, GA. It takes me a good hour to pack a saw for shipping. That includes rounding all the material to do so and packing it correctly. You get what you pay for on the cheap shipping quotes.

That is true. Before I bought mine I borrowed one from a friend of mine. He used to be a skilled tradesman at general motors. He is one of those guys who only buys the best quality tools available. His gage gave me exactly the same reading.
We have an instrument shop here at work that calibrates all the instruments, I will have to bring mine in and have it tested. It is possible that 30 years worth of 16/1 mix has deposited enough carbon in the combustion chamber to raise the compression. Somebody had wrote 16/1 on the saw near the fuel filler. I don't know its history so anything is possible.

attachment.php

I once worked on a Dodge 360 that had been run with the carb set so rich that it had 210 pounds of compression on 2 of the 8 cylinders due to combustion chamber deposits. The other 6 cylinders ranged from 145 to 170. After I removed the deposits all 8 were in the 165-175 range.

Stephen, my point was that 160 is very good for them! You said only blowing 160 like it was not very good.

What ever yours does thats fine but I will repete myself that I have never seen one that high.

That harbor freight compression gage you have pictured does nothing to sell me on that being correct, although if it is thats great.

I picked this one up Sunday. My buddy found a Toro 8/26 snow blower on cl so we went to check it out. The guy had 6 snow blowers in various states of repair or despair! So I asked if he had any saws. Wound up taking this little 2.1 and a Toro 8/32 snow blower minus its engine. $40 for all. The saw runs good. has a new fuel line. I think Im slowly getting every 25 saw in the state!

The other day, Thomas mentioned something about the early 5200 cases and I didn't pay too much attention to it.

I started on this last 5200 the other day and I remembered that this one did have the old style case that Thomas was talking about. This seems to be a very early model 5200 as it is a green top and has the 10-24 handle screws in it.

Here is the case

It gave me the same reading as a much more expensive gage that I borrowed from a friend of mine.

I noticed an identical Harbor freight gage in one of your past posts. They are very simple instruments, not much to go wrong with them perhaps they are not calibrated from the factory.

I have no idea what is the normal reading for a 4200. The only one I ever tested is the one I got from Wisconsin.

It has been my experience that 130-135 is the lower limit for good performance so the diference between 180 and 160 is significant. Perhaps my gage is wrong. I will take it in to our instrument shop and have it tested.

My 350 Husky refused to run at all at 105 on my gage. I am waiting on a piston ring to fix that little problem. I would not hesitate to buy a saw that was blowing 160, that is a pretty healthy number but based on my rather limited experience I think some of them can do better. I am sorry if I gave the impression that it was bad. I just think it was a little overpriced for my taste especially when the shipping was added in. If I had a zillion dollars to spend I would probably think different.:hmm3grin2orange:

Yep, I got one of those gages as well. I went through 3 of those POS before I got one to read the same as my 2 other name brand testers. I use that one sometimes as it has the short cyl threads on it.

I'll tell you what, I got 5 5200's here, and 2 4200's so why don't you bring your gauge over hear and see if any of them read 180?

That has to be a pretty rare saw...It's definitely the first one I've ever seen without the rib!!!

Mark, I hadn't given it to much thought either, till I seen your latest pic. Looked for a pic of mine, since it too is all green, must be early model, with the One screw top cover. Its a smooth case also, no center ridge.

I had one of those older 5200 crankcases somewhere and seen it a year ago. When I couldn't find it a couple of days ago I started to second guess myself. I need to go on the lookout for it again. I was reading in a service bulletin a while back that Poulan added the rib to keep people from punching a hole in the case. Then a second update was added to the crankcase which was extra ribbing.

I put calipers on an old one and a new one from the gasket kit. OD on the OEM one is .870 and the new one from the gasket set I bought is .880 so its actually larger. ID is .625 and .620 respectively. Wall thickness is .040 for the OEM and almost half that at .021, so the sidewall is much thinner on the aftermarket seals.
I guess they aren't an exact match.
Bob

Well the old f^rt, finally had some success. Decided to gingerly sand the O.D. of the seal to reduce its diameter a bit and use Dirko Ht to install. Seemed to work as the old 3400 holds 10lbs pressure and vac. Don't know why I'm fooing around with these 3400's . Have two I'm working on which I need like a hole in the head. Maybe I should stick one of my ported(exhaust) cylinders on and see how it runs. I missed out on a PP 505 on Ebay cause I had determined the max I would spend. Naturally missed by $7.00. Well, had to expect that.

Joe, nice saw but its the snowblower I'm wondering about. Do you plan to use it like a shovel? Kinda push the snow away?

Congrats, Ya old fart!:D I been pretty lucky lately, NOT buying 3400's. They are hard to resist though. Porting one is a good way to practice your skills though. I wallered out the exhaust port on one once, to the size of a 4000. Ran fine, allways wanted to go back in and try some other stuff. Just havn't done it yet.

I saw that 505 too, was VERY curious, but didn't bid on it. So it wasn't me that got it. LOL When I saw that, I thought thats right up Mark's ally. He has a number of those Poulan Pros, and don't think he had a 505 yet. Maybe he does now.:) I do have a Poulan Farm Pro 375 coming though, and a 306, finally.

Gregg,

I don't think Mark got that one. He has a few more than FOUR transactions on fleabay. Wouldn't put that one past a shill bidder.
