The metal filter cover and flat felt or nylon filter were outfitted on saws sold in Eastern hardwood markets. The thought there was that the eastern cutters didn't deal with the fine softwood sawdust like we do in the west. Same thing in Europe, most of the 064s and early 066s you'll see there have the metal filter cover. The HD system initially was intended for western markets but later made available on all saws since it was found to be so beneficial.

They had to go a step further in Australian markets and actually make a proprietary filter system just for Australia.

All of the 064 Arctic saws were also initially sold with the metal filter cover.

mine has a metal filter base. is that normal

ive had this tore down and does measure 54mm

No, they didn't.

Southbound- your saw is worth fixing. That pinhole is fine, just sand the cylinder out by hand real good and get all the piston residue off and you'll be fine. Start out with 220-240 and Liquid wrench and graduate to finer grits.

You should be able to find a good used intake boot off e-bay, and other parts you'll need. Ditch those homemade gaskets and clean everything up real good.

Nevermind the vultures here, they're always trying to get project saws. Make this one into a runner for you.

Thanks for the input...

It is cleaning up nice but the line with the pin hole is a little deep....

Does the line stop at the pinhole? Is the pinhole the result of the muriatic acid? I still say you need to sand it out if there's not another good cylinder the box of parts. It's worth some elbow grease.

I think it does go past the pin hole but it not as deep..I do think the acid has aggravated it... I don't mind sanding I'm worried about going to deep...

that pin hole almost looks like it was meant to be there

I think when they honed it out the last time they took off quite a bit...

Here is where I'm at today...

I don't like the color change around the exhaust....

My 064 has 2 of those pinholes on the bottom of the CYL directly across from each other, they have to be casting flaws, I bet it will be fine.

The recoil is the first indicator, but the cyl base can tell you too, I know its not 100% but most of the 066 cyls have a very think base, the 64s are a bit thinner, I think the easiest way to tell for sure that it has not had a different recoil or something changes is to pull the muff, get some balsa wood, and stick it into the cly all the way, and pull the rope till it marks the wood, then remove and measure it. that is a 64 tho for sure.

When were the first 064 out and when did the 066 come out. ive never seen a 66 without the hd system on .

Well there seems to be a lot of aluminum showing around the exhaust so I am thinking this cylinder is done...

So is it time to give up on this one???

I have called around and no one here will hone out a cylinder...I even tried the cycle shop....Turns out he was the local Stihl dealer for over 18 years before he sold out to the co-op......Any way we talked for some time and he told me to call back that he my find something I can use....

Back with another dumb question...

Does the crank case on the 064 have to be opened up for the 54mm piston as well as the 56mm????

I have no desire to make this the biggest baddest 064 hybrid out there I just want it to run......
