I'm not a pro logger by any means, but I was taught to be looking up when backcutting.... he might have known it was going instead of getting ready to tap his wedges (with his head down)...

And then there is the property owner or whoever that is milling around during all this?

I guess these two things stand out to me as far as "situational awareness" goes. Still a pretty impressive fall!
