From the amount of metal gone off that piston its fairly certain that cylinder isn't worth a hoot in hell. Carbon would leave color behind, that piston looks like it got sheered by something..

I think you're right, something came loose and banged around bad on that side until it got spit out the exhaust. That's the only thing that explains why the one side is still pristine.

I think so too. Still amazed the dealer got it restarted with that much damage. Dales needs to take that saw back to em and get it repaired. I think once they see the damage they will warranty that....

I would take the saw back to the dealer, and say that we sent you....

Although , I am not a "professional"............... The damage looks odd.

Just take it back and act sad, dumb, and pitiful, and tell them that we told you to pull the muffler, and that they {them, that dealer} said the saw was
fine. And just go quiet, let them take it from ther, give them no extra info.

Tell them that I, Fish, a non professional chainsaw mechanic/tech said that
the piston damage looked peculiar, and something is amiss.

The line of damage, and the rest of the piston doesn't look like a normal
lean seizure/overheat.

Then again, what do I know?.....

My first post after seeing the piston pic....

But what do I know????....... sniff.......

I am a "non" "pro", so not a hooker tech, but a "HO" tech, one that only does
"it" for fun..........

Update on the 50cc Dolmar Saw.

Just got back from the dealer this morning and to my saw lives on! No thanks to my abuse.
The dealer checked the fuel and said it looked old and too lean. I confessed it was two months old but did not tell him that I was running STIHL HP Ultra synthetic oil in it. I don’t know if that made the fuel look leaner then say the Dolmar oil would have? Anyways he dumped the tank and added fresh fuel fired it up and adjusted the idle a bit and the saw purrs like new again.
That was a close call. Feel free to add any comments to my list of chain saw sins that I have committed I am not so proud to say I am still a rookie.

1. No long sustained cuts at WOT.
2. Only use fresh fuel even if it means running the excess in my work truck?
3. Never work the saw with a dull chain.

Thanks for all your help.

Just a little info about oil.
As long as the oil you run, regardless of brand, meets the service ratings set by the saw manufacturer, meening the API, JASO, TC ratings, the manufacturer can not deny warrenty service due to the oil you use. FEDERAL LAW, refered to as the Magnuson-Moss Act
In a nut shell, if Dolmar or Stihl etc. requires you to use their oil and only their oil or no warrenty, then they have to provide said product free of charge.
Not trying to get off topic or hyjack just a little info for all.

That's good info.

most of the manufactures get around that law by recommending you use there oil and if you dont to use another high-quality oil at 25-1......thats what it said in my stihl blower manual

Serg

ps it also said in bold print use only sthil 50-1two-stroke engine oil for models with a catalytic converter, which i believe my blower has...... now where is my free oil :greenchainsaw:

Well I will tell ya this, I had a warrenty issue with a snowmobile shop a couple years back, I won't name names or brands, He was going to deny my warrenty because I was running Amsoil instead of the manufacturers branded oil. I made a call to Amsoil and that is when I found out about the Magnuson-Moss Act. In the end the guy almost lost his business over it.

I heard the same thing after I got the sled back from said repair and warrenty issues with dealer, me and the boys went ridin and pretty well tore the rear suspension right outa the sled, blew both shocks, tore the eyelet end off one shock and tore mating mount from suspension frame, broke left suspension rail, boke the w-arm in half and tore a hole in the track. After taking it to a different dealer for repairs, it was still under warrenty, factory rep said they wouldn't fix under warrenty due to rider abuse. I moral of the story, don't ride a trail/lake rocket like a snow cross racing high flyer. always had the motto "Ride It Like Ya Stole It"

Well that wasn't Yamaha's fault. If i wreck something cause i'm beating on it my wallet take's the hit. If broken a lot of stuff from pushing it over the breaking point, i'm not gonna bring it in and expect warranty to fix it.

I sent my motor to a non Yamaha tech as well and everyone came to the same conclusion.....
