Well, this time my dad and me. He had a VFW buddy offer him a non-running Stihl chain saw for $25. Dad took him up on it. He brought it over yesterday, a 028 AV Super Wood Boss.

I took a look at it, had 160 PSI of compression, very dirty (even had a mud dobber's nest on it), but seemed to be in good shape. 20" Stihl bar, .325 chain in good shape. I'm a Husky guy (Stihls are fine, just not a lot of experience with them), but I saw what looked like a tank vent tube that was busted (a metal fitting in the tube). I replaced this with a part of line I had left over from a Husky 51, put in good gas, hit a shot of Seafoam fogger in it, and within 10 minutes I had it running fine. Found out the AV mounts are shot, and one bar stud had been stripped out by using the wrong nut. I tapped and die'd the stud and a new Stihl nut that will work just fine (just can't mix up nuts). The stud had came out of the housing, but I got it re-seated okay. Spent a few hours cleaning it up. Here it is:

I sharpened the chain, and cut some small stuff. Cut just fine. I need to get the AV mounts and gas and oil caps (no retainers) to make this saw 100%. I don't see the 028 model listed on Baileys, and my other parts source doesn't carry Stihl parts. Can anybody help me locate the AV mounts and caps? Thanks!

Also, what would this saw be worth (ballpark) in very good condition?

Good buy. I like the saws but dislike the oilier on them. Seems all the ones I see around here are worn out.

when you put the vent tube back on make sure you install the set screw back into the tube, keep the fuel from pouring out when you turn the saw on it's side
 
Great score there. Might as well just throw a new bar stud in it for a couple bucks. Did you happen to check the intake boot, impulse hose, and fuel line for cracks? That's a nice one for sure. You'd hate to mess it up after setting all those years.

I saw the bar studs, so I'll get one. It runs great, looks like everything else was okay. I put the fitting in a new piece of line for the vent and it did the trick. It starts on the first or second pull cold, only one when warm.
 
From the looks of the PM's I got, this model apparently has a following. Rest assured fellas, if it comes up for sale, I'll let you know.
 
Well, after I got it 100%, my dad told me to keep it. I guess I have a Stihl in the stable now. Gotta find a new 16" -18" Stihl bar and .325 chain now.
 
028 value:

Around here I could get $200 to $225 for that saw. Besides the obvious (Stihl product), what helps it is that it has a 20" bar, AV, and a chainbrake. Not to mention it also has an electronic igntion.

They are a great running strong saw, so what if they are on the heavy side.

Nice job on the clean up.
 
Seems to oil okay. No issues other than the AV mounts are worn out and the caps don't have retainers.

I don't have a source for the parts, but I am green with envy. I sold an 028 super last year, and lived to regret it. With the compression that saw has you should be able to fix those few things and have a nice running Stihl saw. The supers do a bit better on resale value than the regular 028wb's (from what I've seen.). Thanks for the pics, a great job cleaning as well.
 
You should easily get $200 (+ shipping) for an excellent 028S. They don't call it the Super for nothing. :)
