No scoring, but low compression, is that possible?

YEP, that is what the tech told me yesterday, I asked him if the P/C had scoring he said no, I asked him why it failed, he said I don't know. Low compression, 90 and his boss said just replace the P/C. What am I missing here? How can you have low compression with no visible signs of an issue. Rings??
Thanks for educating me, some day I will be answer questions too . . .

It may just need rings if that in fact is the problem, the best way to tell is compression test it yourself and if it is low pull it apart, measure your cylinder bore and piston and if they are within specs pull a ring off and check ring end gap and it will probably be out of specs if it is wore out and just get new rings, more that likely that is all it needs if everything is as they say.

I bet all you need is a set of rings, they get stuck in the grooves, sometimes bad oil will gum them up and they will not expand.

Saw is 346XP, and as many know this is a warranty job, so I guess I should be happy about the P/C replacement! I really did not think just the rings could go bad, I thought if anything happened in the P/C it would be easily seen in the way of scoring, but apparently that is what happened here. And maybe that would explain the HARD hot starts when the saw was 3 months old. I am going to tinker with my craftsman that has 40 PSI so I can see how a saw works, can't really make it worse, lol.

I know in 4 cycles you have the oil control and compression rings, but in a 2 cycle is there only one?

Just a freak thing. My dealer sells a lot of 346s' and told me the other day, he has no problems at all with them and can't remember doing any warranty work on one.

Many huskys have just one ring, if you can get a new P&C under warranty I would go for it.

If it wasn't under warranty I would just throw a ring in and go.

I would make sure the dealership is putting a OEM 346 P&C in. There are a few saws in that same family, the others will fit, but the power will be down quite a bit.

I am trying to see it that way but I have been without my new, "professional" saw for about a month and have no firewood, and I heat my house with a Hardy H4.
I am currently using my 19 year old craftsman . . . that is hard to swallow!

Had your first dealer been on the ball, you would of been back in business in under a week.

2-3 days to order parts, one hour to replace top end.

Like I said, just a freak thing.

The OE had less cc than the NE. If you heat with wood, you should be a year ahead. (or more)

That is why I don't buy poulan.LOL

I may be all wet, but sounds like your dealer is going to get a very useable p&c out of this deal.

why should the dealer get it?

The customer should get to keep his used/maybe broken/maybe not parts. He paid for 'em. Warranty is extra you pay for in advance as well, it is part of new saw purchase price they average out over all saw sales. Heck, they probably get a corporate deduction for it..don't know but possible.

No scoring low compression sounds suspicious. Like said above, just maybe a sticky ring. Coulda just PB blasted some down the sparkplug hole and let it sit for awhile, then turn it upside down and crank it around a little, then try some fresh good mix.. Or decomp valve stuck open with a hunka carbon up in there, or a leak elsewhere maybe.
