No they are not chrome plated

Did a bit of research from what I can tell all parts of a chain, links guides right teeth left teeth are all made and heat treated separately and assembled after. This means and entire batch of untreated right teeth is possible

correct me if logic is failing me here but would the cutting teeth be treated before the chain is assembled? And left and right cutters would be manufactured separately? if so a badly heat treats set of rights or lefts could be possible. I’m probably grasping at straws

I would agree with you if it was random. You missed the fact it happened multiple times and not at all with the other saw. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an object embedded in the tree.

yes right side from the operators perspective.

I’ll get some pictures when I get home. Out of town working. when say folded allow me to clarify, the front of the cutter is bending slightly down and into itself. To the point the file doesn’t actually fit. As I make one stroke with the file it removes the folded material and fits properly...

I’ll double check the catcher and see if I see anything. I did a quick peek but didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary

I hand file. And truthfully the right side felt soft to me. One stroke would completely remove the folded over section. 2 more would completely straighten the cutting edge. my gut honestly is thinking a bad chain.

It appears to be. I’m not 100 percent sure how to check though

i did check the cover and sprocket, all appears fine. As for metal in the tree I thought that myself. That why I decided to see if the issue happens with my other saw and it didn’t. I’m actually starting the wonder if I just got a bad chain. I’m not able to go out but I have considered taking...

So weird thing happened on the weekend. Went out to cut some downfall. Put on my new Stihl chain on my ms290, ( last time out old chain snapped in two ) started cutting. Things seemed fine. Half way through the first tree I notice the saw dust had changed from good chips to a fine powder. I stop...

No it’s not a STIHL thing. It a combo of greedy local dealer because being in the middle of butt nowhere your options are limited and having a saw that’s been discontinued

So based on the fact I do have 3 brand new .325 pitch 0.063 gauge 67dl chains here maybe a .063 gauge bar would be cheaper?
  16. B

    New and lost

One other thing to point out is I had a friend think he was doing me a favour. Have me three brand new chains. But they are .063 gauge. This is the reason I inquired about the bar. I’ve done a bunch of searching, but for clarity please correct me if wrong here: Gauge = thickness of the...

I checked out those chains Marshy and please correct me if I’m wrong but 66 links will not fit a 67 link bar. Correct? Sorry for my ignorance

    So if I replace my 3003 000 6613 bar with a 3003 000 6813 bar (or Oregon duplicate) and add a .325 0.063 67 link chain instead of the .325 0.050 67 link chain I shouldn’t need to replace the sprocket correct?

So is it possible to just change out the bar on my saw to a .063 gauge? Or is there a whole bunch of changes to make?

    New and lost

so I have a STIHL ms290. I know it’s not a top saw. It has a 16” .325 pitch 0.050 gauge, 67 link chain and bar. Looking for a replacement chain. And searching with those specs I’m finding nothing. Well aside from my local shady authorized STIHL dealer who like to up price his chains. 78...
