I want to be on Axe-men!

logging jobs are competitive, because there is less work going on. In a town like Vernonia where everyone knows everyone, an outsider doesn't stand a chance. Not enough jobs to go around. There is lots of talented fallers working that aren't on tv.

    Would You Climb This One?

A solo climber died in Lake Oswego about a week ago. The top 10 feet of a decayed cottonwood broke out, and the guy fell 70 feet. OSHA said it was the climbers fault for not doing proper tree inspection.:(

Video of felling palm into pool

Your videos are highly entertaining. Fun to see how others work. So was it a PITA to get the tree out of the pool?

    Seed prevention on Cottonwood

The label on this is supposed to be broadened any day to include ornamentals. http://www.arborsystems.com/pinscher.html ? Think its about $500 + chemical to get set up with the equipment. I called today to check if the label had been changed yet, and they said their cottonwood trials had gone...

    Liquidambar Advice Needed

Any advice on preventing surface roots that will wreck that pretty lawn and sucker everywhere they are hit by a lawnmower. Maybe the landscaper purposely sabataged those trees in dread of picking up those pesky balls:p.

Dogwood-- wrong time of year to trim a branch?

The natives out here can get over 50 feet. Real purty when they aren't riddled with anthracnose.

Used Truck with a Chipper Box?

Iron Technics Enterprises out of Woodinville, WA sells refurbished and new chip trucks. I bought a used Asplundh truck from him, and will likely do business with him again. California Tree Equipment looks like they have a decent inventory on their website.

    stump grinding depth

If it comes up I tell customers my machine only goes down 13". And 12" deep has been enough to get under all but a few I've done. The city water dept. wants stumps ground 18", but that's where they're sticking pipes.

How would you finish this tree ???

If a kill isn't an option, I'd call the utility ask them to hang gut(hollow plastic tubes) on the phases. Put sheets of plywood on the roof, and lean some up against the house. Climb up through the phases as high as comfortable and strategicallly cut small pieces, probably using a...

    Acer macrophyllum -dead?, causes?

I've removed several big leaf maples in the past year that look similar to that. I asked the head of the OSU disease lab about them hoping for her to agree with my diagnosis of one. She said it could be any number of problems and was likely a combination. I took hollow section of maple into...

    root compaction and air spade

Fungus that isn't myccorhizal is good too :blob3:. Since fungal excretions provide stickiness that clumps soil together forming good soil structure. Also, fungal hyphae growing through the soil opens up pore space for water, air, and critters. So...even fungus that isn't myccorhizal is...

    How Do You Keep Motivated

Visit the boards to read and realize other guys are going through the same crap. And reading about the guys that have made it over the hump. Bad days are tough knowing a $45k 8 hour a day job is only a phone call away. Then the memories of the political BS, and having to do things someone...

    compost tea

Did you know this stuff is alive? According to the soil food web people it needs to be constantly aerated, and can start to turn anaerobic in 15 minutes without aeration. Not something you want to buy off a shelf in gallon jugs, tank mix with fungicides/pesticides, or leave in the tank all...

    Storage for chipper knives

My Asplundh chipper came with a blade box mounted between the drum and fender. It's handy because it can be reached while changing blades. Plenty of room for a few sets of blades, and everything else needed for blade changes.

    So whadja do today?

Absolutely. Think he'd do better on his own though...says the self employed guy, that'd like to hire him as a sub as needed. I needed someone on the ground that could communicate with the customer. This customer requires a lot of communication, and fired their last arborist for "being...

    So whadja do today?

Worked with an AS member, Mr. Jason Ladue. Took down a 28" rotten tri-top maple in an exclusive neighborhood. Had to carry the wood over a bridge and through two gates. Filled up the chip box, had firewood and brush in the mancab. Tied a full garbage can onto and hung the blower off the...
