Cherry tree oozing red gel from trunk and branches

Thanks for the replies. I cant find any evidence of bugs, no holes, no sawdust. Its also gotten a lot worse in the past month, virtually every branch, no matter how small has some. After reading up on gummosis, I dont think this ones worth saving. Next question: Is it still safe to burn the...

Cheap saws that became money pits

All of my saws try to become money pits. I will only fix them twice. The third thing that breaks, they go on a shelf for good and I find another one. Half of my saws have been used exactly 3 times :(

Cherry tree oozing red gel from trunk and branches

5 or 6 years ago a big spruce tree fell on this little cherry tree ant took half of it out. It never really recovered. It only grows about half to a third as many leaves as it should, and when it blooms in the spring time, its done in 24 hours. Last year I noticed a couple tiny spots of this...

Longer burn time from a Vigilant?

Guys with old vigilants, or similar VC stoves - how long does your burn overnight? From loading it full to the top, I get about 5 hours of good heat burning oak and black locust. After 8 hours I can usually touch the stove with my hand and need to use kindling on what coals are left. Can I...

I could actually make money off that log. Cut it up and sell to local richies who think they smoke meat.

How many times do you touch your firewood?

    1. Logs into truck at scrounge site 2. Logs out of truck, I buck them on the way out and stack as rounds. I count that all as one "touch" 3. From the rounds stack to the splitting tire 4. Stacking the splits 5. Once to twice a week I carry half a pallet worth of seasoned splits from my...

how much wood do you use per day?

When Im home, about 1 split every 30 to 45 minutes. When I leave or sleep I pack it full, which is about 6 pieces. That will keep the house warm for about 3 hours. By 4 hours the oil burner is kicking in. Im running on maple and cherry right now. Some oak will be mixed in there once it...

    Favorite Firewood

Most of the free wood I get is white oak and maple. Obviously the oak is better.

    arborvitae 6' broken off top

I have an arborvitae that was topped 5 years ago by the cable company. It looks like it could have been topped yesterday. Still looks healthy, but it hasnt grown an inch in the upward direction. The upper branches still get fatter, but they dont point up.

Who uses a LOT of kindling?

I have to relight almost every morning. Newspaper, and white cedar for kindling.

How many times do you handle your wood.

I get them already as rounds or at least short enough for a pickup truck. 1. Load into truck in the spring time when suburban people have tree work done. 2. Stack to be cut to length 3. After cutting, stack rounds 4. The following winter once they freeze, I split them and stack a third time...

    Carpenter ants

I just leave them there. They dont eat the wood, so they wont be infesting the rest of the pile. If theyre still there by winter, they'll get burned.
