Well, I got my eye on a pro mac 610 for $25.00 localy. The guy says it needs the carb gone through. I believe it can take up to a 24" bar. I read somewhere that its a 60cc and makes about 4hp @ 6000 rpm. Looks like it has a hand brake. Should be enough saw if I can get it running right. I have heard some good things about these old Macs. Should be worth the gamble, as I will do all my own work. Thoughts about the 610 ?

Just follow the link below and buy one. You won't be dissappointed. I promise! You'll find TONS of reasons to use one once you have a nice one.

I've already taken the liberty filtering out most of the 'non-complete saw' items. Take your pick. You got Stihl, Husky, and J-Reds to choose from. hahaha

Linky: Nice list of saws!

What is this "ebay" of which you speak ? Thanks for the links.

They're heavy, but still lots of them around, and lots of parts where you find them. I bought mine new in '88 or '89 and still have it. I bought a new carb for mine for $25 shipped, and the same for a new oil pump. They have an adjustable, automatic oiler with a manual oiler besides.

I just have to wait now for the guy to email or call me. THEN ITS MINE !:chainsaw: I hate waiting for something I want !

Rent a saw now. Save your money. Buy a good saw later.

Good point. I will check my local rental shops for the daily fee.

Edit: These are very large logs, I underestimated there size. When I get over to my moms house I will take some pics. I also am planning on making cord wood out of it.

Since nobody suggested this yet: Home Depot use to sell their former rental saws, usually a Makita 6401, for just above $200. Their shape will of course differ from one to another, but they're usually in good working condition, and a great buy at that price. It's the same as a Dolmar 6400, which is a durable professional saw, and it can be rebuilt to a 7901 for around another $200, should the need arise (it usually does around here...) Good choice if you're on a budget.

If your budget could be stretched some, they can also be bought new at stunning prices right now, search for dcs6401-20 on Ebay and they range from $350-$400 plus shipping. I got mine for $370 :)

Well, I have an appointment to pickup the pro mac 610 tomorow. Should be an easy fix (I hope). I also found a Husqvarna 40 for sale for, you guessed it, $40.00. Its already in running condition. I am assuming its a 40cc model ? Might be good for the smaller stuff. Anybody used the Husky 40 before ?

Here is a pic :

Yes they are a bit heavy for there size but very reliable! My 3.7 eager beaver never need more than three pulls to start. My saw is completely stock and has been cutting firewood for years great saw nothing flashy but gets the job done!

looks like you might be coming down with CAD! Husky 40 is a good saw imo yes it's 40cc and built tougher than the new generation small saws.
A hunting buddy of mine has one I am pretty sure it has a mag case on it.I have used it occasionally but seems like one of them tougher older less plasticky saws

ZZ, those older, big Poulans are some good saws. Probably the best bang for your buck. I missed one yesterday that looked new, prolly a ring and clean the cylinder up. It went for7 bucks and change, plus shipping. I am kicking myself for letting that one get by!

Those old Poulans were made well, here in the U.S. The new ones are junk. Also, the older Homelites are indestructable as well! Look for a good runner in either flavor, it will prolly outlast you.

i have to say scootr you are correct on that note the older saws no matter what brand it was will outlast what they make today yep new saws are junk they make them cheap cause they are cheap the cheaper the lesser time it will be that the cylinder gets worn out

i wish Americans would wise up and bring out there older units cause the quality of the older units are much more better reliability than what is made today

calvin

us repair people are ammuned to CAD

and ZZ i happen to have pro mac 610 parts if you need any
also have the ipl if you need that also

You cant kill older macs IMO. 55 rancher is a good saw if you can find one.for a job that small you really don't need something to big.

You are correct with your guess. The only help I have found is to go buy more saws. :givebeer:

When I came here I had one. Now I have four... Curse you arboristsite! :buttkick:

Ha ha you guys kill me ! :chainsaw: Anyways got the pro mac 610 home. Took off the filter cover and filter, squirted a little either down the throat. (not mine, the saw's) and one pull one start ! It looks like it needs new fuel line and maybe a carb cleanup, but thats about it. Sounded real good too ! Its a little heavy, but not like I though it would be. Looks like it has a 16" bar right now. I took some pics of it along with one with its little brother. I post them in a bit. :)

I actually let out an audible gasp when I read that. Not only does ether not have oil mixed in with it, it does a wonderful job of cleaning oil off of surfaces so they can rub together metal on metal. Nothing wrong with half a teaspoon of premix, but no starting fluid in two strokes or diesels.

Your right. But its all I had handy. It only ran for about a second. I swear I wont do it again ! :monkey: I did think of that, but I jumped the gun. I need to run out and get some fuel. I also got my little poulan to start as well (first time in 5 years). What is the recommended oil theses days ? Synthetic or petroleum based ?

Nice list of saws on Ebay!

It's this crazy theoretical place where chainsaws fall from the heavens for 'pennies on the dollar'. I've had good luck with Ebay. I make sure the seller has good rep then I look to see how many items of that type he/she has sold. For example, if I'm looking at a chainsaw, I make sure he's sold more than just the one that is listed. The more he/she has sold, the more I trust them with type of item. When I got the 026 the guy had sold a ton of Stihl saws and parts. :)
