Bought a Fiskars splitter

Well, I was in Menards today and since that I heard that they have the splitting axe on sale, decided to pick one up.

I got home and pulled it out and went after some oak that I had tried to split earlier this winter.

This oak was standing dead for probably close to 5 years and was iron hard. Previously I had been using a standard 6# maul and hitting it hard enought to leave vapor trails off the maul! Little luck and lots of work had gotten me not much splitting.

I took the splitting axe and gave it about a 3' swing..blasted right through it! Couldn't believe it! Split a knotty piece that I had given up on with one wack!

Overall....VERY IMPRESSED!!!!

Careful though! When guys say these axes are sharp...they aren't kidding...you could shave with one of these!

Mine got shipped yesterday.

They don't sell them in Canada so I mailed some $ to a buddy in Michigan and he bought me one and shipped it for me.

Glad to hear that you like it. I have some elm that I've been saving up for my Super Splitter.

I bought one last week.as I was unpacking it, I managed to cut myself. Yep, they are very sharp!! Now, if the snow would melt so I can if this baby works as well as everyone says....Been using a 6 lb maul till now.

I have found my Fiskars to work better for the harder woods and my 6lb maul for softer stuff. To be honest, I haven't used either this year as I don't have much time and hydraulic is faster and easier. I guess I have been limbing with the Fiskars, but have be be careful not to chop off my leg.

Elm is the nemesis of all splitting mauls/axes. I have to whittle mine down from the edges, most often. Although at zero degrees, I can break it apart like popsicles sometimes.

I've got the Super Splitter, the biggest ax they sell, and the next size down from the biggest ax (my small ax).

The Super Splitter will be used for elm and bigger, knotty rounds.

The big ax will be used for most splitting jobs and for knocking branches off of logs.

The small ax will be used for hunting/camping.

Those are the only 3 axes that I need.

Thanks to all on this site who made threads about them or otherwise posted up about Fiskars. They are one heck of an ax!

my buddy has a fiskars axe and your right it is damn sharp. but the handle on his is short and i feel like im gonna chop my leg off. i still love the old 6lb splitting maul.

1) I only swing the Fiskars from head height...I don't take an over the should power swing like I do with a maul, and I don't let my right hand slide like I do on a maul.

2) I try to aim at the middle or right side of the log. That seems to be safer. If I go to the left side it seems a lot more likely to come down towards my foot or shin (and my boot has one good cut in it already from the axe!)

It's worth taking your time to learn how the tool works. I put mine away for a while after I first used it since it scared the bejesus out of me. This year I started using it again based on the feedback here, I'm glad I did.

I just got one too a few days ago from Menards too, was going to buy a maul insted. But, they had slim pickings (VERY picked over) in the axe/maul racks. Used it, and very impressed with it. Could maybe use another pound or two and I did feel the handle seemed a little short too. Now it comes with me on all woodcutting expedtions.

It was engineered to be used with an over head swing, dangling straight behind the back to start, and aimed at rounds stationed at or near knee level. Swung as intended, one can achieve kinetic energy levels as high or higher than one is able to produce with the heavy mauls, and at less physical energy expenditure. After becoming well acquainted with mine, I've reduced my complaint regarding handle dimension from 3 or 4 inches too short, to only a couple.

Still, a great axe.

I love the Fiskars. Got mine at Menards, too. I was using it 2 days ago. Used the Monster Maul about three times and the Fiskars maybe a hundred. Nice pile of wood, and my shoulders weren't complaining. Only quit because my gloves aren't worth a crap (or I'm getting old) and my hands were getting cold.

Got mine last saturday at sears, saw this post and had to try it. Pretty impressive. I like that you can use it for an axe and a splitter. You can hit logs in the SIDE on the ground and split them, it's like a wood bomb. From reading the posts, knew to be careful. No problems yet still 11 toes. Lanny:greenchainsaw:

I'm kinda the same way...to a point...the point at which my wallet stops me. I have access to a splitter, but I've been following this thread and I might have to see if my wallet will allow me to get the Fiskars. Some of my rounds I cut seem a waste of time to split with the splitter and I need the exercise every now and then.

Yeah its kinda steep in price, but it is cheaper than a new saw though. It works for me to split those cedar blocks for kindling. You know how when it's dark, you been gone too long and have to restart the fire. So when you split that cedar with a maul it goes off into the darkness and you cant find it til morning. This axe is pretty precise because it works well without a big swing. Lanny
