Picked up my 488 today, it is great, so much better than my old saw.
Thanks for your help!

What are you going to run for bar and chain? I'm running both 18" and 20" bars with .325 20 RC from Bailey's. I find the 18" to be the better match for the 488's.

If you're going to be running in dusty conditions you would do well to get the flocked air filter if it doesn't have one already. No real need for it up here in PNW where it stays wet, but might save you some headache down there where its drier.

Sorry, tt, you lose....

I have a woods ported 488....schweet saw....it does lag my ported 346's and 5100's, but that's no surprise.....

Also, it is the lightest of the bunch.

It has a 18" bar, the chain is whatever comes standard. I will be looking for
something else. I guess you would recommend the .325 RC from Bailey's?
I will look for a flocked air filter also. Thanks for the tip.

The MS250 is the only Stihl I've ever really been disappointed in.

thats possibly because you havnt run it long enough lol in all seriousness tho its almost unfair to compare the two. Im glad you went with the 488 as its a much better built saw, more power, and it will be very reliable to you. $400 with a case is great as the saw alone retails for $425. As for your chain, go to your local dealer and ask for an oregon 20LPX72 chain, you will looooooove it! I run it on my 18" 488 and it eats up some wood.

That's quite possibly true on the MS250 because the more we run the
MS180, the better it runs and cuts. But that doesn't explain the flooding
and hard starting especially once it was warmed up, it started better cold
than warm. I'd be willing to try another MS250 mainly because we don't
use our saws enough to justify the MS260, has there been any changes at
all on the MS250 from 3 or 4 years ago? Even if I got one and didn't really
like it, again, I could sell on eBay like I did the other one and I don't think I
lost but about $50 after 2 years of light use. Heck I bought an 046 used and
used it for a year or so, until my back problems started, and actually got $25
more than what I paid for it.

You may have mixed up with carnaco, I think he got the 488 :)

I agree that its not a fair comparison, its like apples to pumpkins. A 488 is a lot closer to a 260 than a 250 IMO..:spam:

I'm not the chain expert on here by any means. There might be better chain out there but the 20RC does fine by me and I haven't found anything else for the price. The only other chains I've run on the 488's are some Oregon branded and I've got no problems with it either.

Good source for Shindaiwa parts is Edge & Engine, a site sponsor. Good folks to work with and when you call you actually get to talk to somebody who has some knowledge on the Shindaiwa lineup.

In case you don't know, the Shindaiwa online site has IPL's on all their equipment which is really nice when looking for parts as Edge & Engine has an online parts store where you can find the part and know instantly if they have it in stock. The system is new and they've had some glitches but it's cool when its working.

Love all the replies. The reason the 488 was on sale is because they are now out of the saw market since Echo bought them. The 488 is a good saw as well as a few other models that they built. All of you bashing the 250 compared to a 488 are not that intelligant since they are two completely different saws. Compare it to a pro Stihl then make your judgement.

Most everyone is saying that the 488 is a better saw than the 250, maybe the 250 took a well deserved bash or 2. I'd think the 488 and MS260 should compare real good with each other, light, decent power, built good and handle good. Steve

I also looked at the MS 270 $485 w/case and the MS 260 Pro $555 w/case.
The 488 seemed like a great deal at $340 w/case and a good saw on top of that.

i think you picked the right saw between the two. $339 is a good price for the 488.

everybody i know that has a 488 seems to like them.:greenchainsaw:

:agree2:, my only fear would be why he sold the Shinny so cheap. If he was a good dealer that would make me feel much better about the purchase. A good dealer would fix any problems that may arise.
